Ahr follows the Ahr Valley and, at 535 hectares in 2025, is one of Germany's smallest wine regions. Red varieties cover 79 percent of its vineyards, the highest share in the country. Pinot Noir accounts for 64.9 percent of plantings and is the leading grape. Its German name is Spätburgunder. Frühburgunder, an early-ripening Pinot Noir relative, is another Ahr specialty.

The lower valley has gentler, loess-rich slopes, while the middle valley has volcanic slate and rocky soils. Ahr Spätburgunder ranges from velvety to fiery, and Portugieser is light and charming. Riesling is the region's most common white wine. In 1868, 18 Mayschoss vintners founded what is described as the world's first wine-growers' cooperative after poor harvests, phylloxera and a collapsed regional wine trade.
