Vouni Panagias

Vouni Panagias lies east of the Paphos mountains in western Cyprus. Vineyards sit at about 800 metres, in a mild mountain climate, on soils ranging from clay to gypsum. Local places include Pano Panagia, Chrysorrogiatissa, Statos-Agios Fotios, Galataria and Amargeti. Xynisteri, the main local white grape, can make light-bodied, aromatic wines with green-apple, peach and apricot notes. The red grape Maratheftiko can give red-fruit, violet and rose aromas. Mavro makes reds and rosés, while Carignan Noir and Cabernet Sauvignon are also grown. Under the protected designation Vouni Panagias-Ambelitis, a wine labelled Xynisteri must contain at least 85 percent of that grape and reach at least 11 percent alcohol.
