Laona Akamas sits on Cyprus's northwestern shores, with vineyards among villages and rugged coastline. Sea breezes temper the vineyard climate, though strong winds also reach the vines. The region makes white and red wines. Xynisteri is its indigenous white grape, while Maratheftiko is described as a rare, ancient red grape. Wines from the region are cool yet solid, with fine aromas.
Kathikas, Arodes and Ineia are distinct village sites for Xynisteri, and their wines are intended to show different expressions of the grape. Kathikas has traditional goblet vines in calcific soil, and its single-vineyard Xynisteri has a salty finish. Arodes has clay-limestone soil, elevation and east orientation. Its wine is pale straw yellow.
