Krasochoria Lemesou

Krasochoria Lemesou means “wine villages”. On the dry southern slopes of Cyprus's Troodos mountains, a wine trail connects 20 named villages and settlements with a long history of vine growing. Xynisteri is the principal white grape and Mavro the principal red. Xynisteri also grows at higher, cooler sites and can make wines with lemon, peach and white-plum flavours. Oak ageing may add spicy or nutty notes. Cabernet Sauvignon, Mataro, Grenache and Syrah are also grown. Xynisteri is made into sparkling wines and orange wines, which are whites fermented with their grape skins. Some examples come from single vineyards or are aged on lees, the spent yeast. Krasochoria Lemesou was registered as an EU protected designation of origin on 17 February 2006.
