Across Istria & Kvarner, coastal and inland vineyards have different growing conditions. Istria has red terra rossa soils near the coast and pale, clay-rich soils inland, where Alpine and Mediterranean weather influences meet. Malvazija istarska is its leading white grape. Its wines can be straw-yellow and floral, with moderate acidity. Teran makes ruby-coloured reds with lively fruit and freshness. In Kvarner, the Hrvatsko primorje area grows Žlahtina. Its white wines can be relatively low in alcohol, with apple, ripe-citrus, meadow-herb and floral notes. Muškat momjanski is an intensely aromatic Muscat wine associated with Momjan and Buje. The name can also appear as Moscato di Momiano.
