Melnik lies in Bulgaria's Struma Valley, with sandy, rocky slopes. Its concentrated wines have a tradition of long ageing in underground cellars. Shiroka Melnishka is also called Broad Leaved Vine of Melnik. Melnik 55, known as Early Melnik Vine, is described as having a more intense red colour and a more concentrated flavour than Broadleafed Melnik Vine.
