In Brazil's São Francisco Valley, growers can choose when to prune and harvest rather than work to one fixed annual season. High temperatures, strong sunlight and irrigation water support more than one vine cycle a year. Two pruning events and two harvests are possible, and harvest and winemaking can take place in practically every month.

The region makes dry and semi-dry fine sparkling wines, sweet Muscat sparkling made by an Asti-type method, young still whites, and still reds for early drinking or ageing. Chenin Blanc, Viognier and Sauvignon Blanc are the principal white varieties, with Verdejo also used. Chenin Blanc suits the hot conditions and can bring relatively high acidity with a fairly neutral aroma.

Tropical wines have been made in the São Francisco Valley for roughly three decades. Irrigation projects helped establish fine-wine production in this semi-arid part of Brazil, where it has since consolidated.
