Maasvallei Limburg

Maasvallei Limburg is a cross-border PDO in the Meuse valley, shared by Belgium and the Netherlands. Gravel beneath loam is associated with fine acidity and mineral flavour, alongside more weight and breadth. Most bottles are made from a single variety, so the grape is a useful clue to the wine's style.

Maasvallei Limburg is a protected designation of origin for wine along a narrow stretch of the Meuse valley, from Lanaken in Belgium to Roermond in the Netherlands. The Meuse largely marks the border, but the designation includes both countries.

A gravel layer five to fifteen metres thick lies beneath loam in the vineyards. The mixed gravel is associated with mineral flavours and fine acidity; the loam with greater weight, depth and breadth. The valley's sheltered, moderate microclimate allows slow ripening.

Most wines are made from a single grape variety. Auxerrois is dry, fruity and soft in acidity. Chardonnay can be taut or creamy, Riesling takes a more aromatic direction, and Dornfelder brings amarena cherry, blackberry and elderberry with light, ripe tannins. The place name tells you where the wine comes from; the grape gives a useful sense of its style.
