Hageland lies broadly between Leuven, Aarschot, Diest and Landen, where repeated rows of steep hills shape the vineyards. Its wine soils are former sea floors. On south-facing slopes, exposed iron sandstone leaves sandy, stony ground that is too dry for many crops but suits vines well.
Hagelandse wijn is a Belgian protected designation of origin, registered with the European Union in 2004 and described as Belgium's oldest PDO. The appellation permits a wide range of classic and resistant grapes, including Auxerrois, Chardonnay, Grüner Veltliner, Regent and Tempranillo. That broad choice allows for very different wines, from Burgundy-inspired single-variety Chardonnay to blends of classic and disease-resistant grapes. Red wines remain a clear minority, while the region's wines are known for pronounced acidity and work well with food.
