Haspengouw's vineyards lie on loam and marl. Loam is associated with fullness in the wines, marl with minerality. Many designated parcels sit on south-facing, well-drained hills, where extra sun and drainage help grapes ripen. Light during the ripening season and the northern climate are associated with notable acidity.
Wine growing in Borgloon reaches back to the tenth century, when the Wijnluyden guild worked in wine growing and trade. Haspengouwse wijn is produced in wine-growing zone A and registered as a protected designation of origin. The appellation permits Auxerrois, Chardonnay, several Pinot varieties, Bacchus, Optima and Würzer. Its grapes must all come from the approved area, and the wine must be made there.
