Vlaamse mousserende kwaliteitswijn is a Protected Designation of Origin for Belgian sparkling wine. Every grape must come from the designated geographic area, and the wine undergoes its second fermentation in bottle under the traditional method. Producers may use nine grapes, including Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier, Riesling and Johanniter. At least nine months on lees brings autolytic character to wines described as fresh, fruity and often mineral.
