Oberösterreich is the protected wine origin for the whole of Upper Austria. Most wines carrying the name are Qualitätswein, an Austrian wine category. The grape, vintage and any smaller place name give more detail about an individual bottle. A named vineyard site must be preceded by the word Ried on a label. Village, larger-site and Ried names generally require at least 85 percent of the grapes to come from the named place. Upper Austria also regulates planting rights and keeps a register of vineyards and wine businesses.
