Victoria sits in the south-eastern corner of mainland Australia and has more wine regions and individual wineries than any other Australian state. Its northern and western regions are warm, while other parts are cooler than states farther north and west.

That range accommodates sparkling wine, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Cabernet, Shiraz and fortified styles. Victoria was Australia's largest wine-producing state in the 1880s, before changing gold-mining fortunes and phylloxera halted production in many areas. Interest in Victorian wine returned in the 1970s. The regional name matters because Victoria does not describe one climate or one style.
