In Argentina's Cuyo region, San Juan's vineyards sit in fertile oases within a largely mountainous, dry province. Syrah is the region's emblematic grape, while Malbec also matters. San Juan Syrah can show firm tannins with plum, berries, black tea and ground pepper.
Tulum, Zonda and Ullum are the principal valley names. Valle del Pedernal is a legally recognized Argentine geographical indication for a defined area, and its Syrah is associated with higher acidity, pure fruit aromas, deep colour and pronounced tannins. San Juan also makes organic sparkling wine alongside still wines.
