Salta

Salta is a winegrowing province in Argentina, with vineyards in the dry Calchaquí Valleys and a major wine centre at Cafayate. Vineyards sit above 1,700 metres. Torrontés Riojano makes aromatic white wines, while Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon and Tannat are among the red grapes grown here.

Salta's wine country in Argentina follows the Calchaquí Valleys, shared with Tucumán. The dry, temperate valleys hold vineyards above 1,700 metres, and some in Salta reach around 3,000. Cafayate is a major wine centre here. Torrontés, especially Torrontés Riojano, is Salta's characteristic white grape. Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon, Tannat, Bonarda, Syrah, Barbera and Tempranillo make up its red range. Reds can be deeply coloured, with ripe plum and blackberry, a full body and soft tannins. Valle de Cafayate on a label identifies wines from Cafayate Department.
