La Rioja is Argentina's third wine province, after Mendoza and San Juan. It has 7,210 hectares of vines across 1,125 vineyards, with the greatest concentration in Chilecito. The local wine route runs through Aimogasta, Anillaco, Anjullón, Chilecito and Famatina.

In the Famatina Valley, vineyards sit roughly 900 to 1,400 metres above sea level on alluvial loam and sandy-loam soils. The valley is hot, sunny and near-desert, with limited rainfall and summer temperatures that can exceed 45°C. Italian migrants who arrived in the 1940s are linked to its viticulture.

Torrontés Riojano is one of Argentina's three officially recognized Torrontés varieties. This aromatic white grape makes dry wines with a distinctive Muscat-like flavour. La Rioja also produces grapes for wine and must, alongside raisins.
