The Producer

The Gruber family has held the winery since 1724. Siblings Maria, Ewald and Christian are the family’s third generation running it. Ewald Gruber is responsible for the cellar after training in Klosterneuburg and practical experience in Australia and New Zealand; Christian works in the vineyards, and Maria handles marketing and exports. Grapes are also bought in on a large scale alongside the estate’s own vineyard work.

Place

Röschitz lies in the northern part of Lower Austria’s Weinviertel. The vineyard holdings extend around the main estate and into Straning/Limberg and Maissau, with 55 hectares around Röschitz itself. Near Manhartsberg, on the Waldviertel border, the vines grow on granite primary rock. Hot days help ripening, while very cool nights help preserve acidity. Röschitz Grüner Veltliner carries the Weinviertel name on the label.

Wines

Röschitz Grüner Veltliner is the 2024 Weinviertel wine, and Gruber Röschitz Riesling is the 2023 bottle. The Riesling wine has an ageing window of three to five years. The vineyards also include red varieties, which occupy 30 percent of the plantings, with Zweigelt at 25 percent alongside Pinot Noir and St. Laurent. The named range places two white wines beside this red vineyard base.

In The Glass

Grüner Veltliner Klassik is bright yellow with shimmering green reflections. Fresh orchard fruit and lime lead into lively acidity, followed by spice on the finish. Riesling Röschitz shows stone fruit and white vineyard peach on the nose, then juicy apricot and fresh citrus on the palate. Its finish is delicate and mineral, with a light feel. The vines for this Riesling are 10 to 30 years old.

Final Word

Gruber Röschitz is a family winery in northern Weinviertel where organic vineyard work and granite soils frame white wines from Grüner Veltliner and Riesling, alongside plantings of Zweigelt, Pinot Noir and St. Laurent.
