The Producer
The estate has remained in family ownership for more than 200 years. Ernst F. Loosen has led it since 1988.
Every estate-owned vineyard parcel is planted with own-rooted vines, some up to 100 years old. Dr. Loosen produces Grosses Gewächs wines from ten vineyards classified as VDP.Grosse Lage. Vineyard work includes sustainable management, yield reduction and hand-picking.
Ernst Loosen's guiding idea is that wines should express soil, climate and grape variety. The cellar work follows that focus across dry and residual-sweetness styles.
Place
Erdener Treppchen is a steep, slate-based vineyard. Its Riesling Kabinett carries peach, citrus and delicate floral aromas over slate-derived minerality.
Wines
The 2024 Red Slate is a dry Riesling classified as VDP.Gutswein. Lively and juicy, it combines rich fruit, powerful structure and fine acidity. Grapefruit, passion fruit, red apple and blackcurrant form its fruit register. The estate matures its dry estate Rieslings for a period in large oak barrels.
The 2023 Erdener Treppchen Riesling Kabinett comes from the Erdener Treppchen VDP.Grosse Lage and retains residual sweetness. Lively acidity and moderate sweetness lead into a refreshing, precise finish.
Blue-, red- and grey-slate Rieslings form a three-wine comparison. The dry blue- and red-slate wines are clear, crisp and mineral; the off-dry grey-slate wine is smoother and juicier.
