Who makes it

Massimo Benevelli prints the word contadino on every bottle he makes. Not winemaker. Not vigneron. Farmer. He grew up on the estate his father Piero started in 1978 with five hectares in Monforte d'Alba, went into the vineyards at age 14, and eventually took over both the farming and the cellar. That sequence matters: Massimo's frame is the land first, the cellar second, and the label reflects it without apology.

The estate sits in Monforte d'Alba, one of the five communes that make up the Barolo DOCG, the appellation covering Nebbiolo grown in the Langhe hills south of Alba in Piemonte. Barolo requires a minimum of 38 months' ageing from harvest, at least 18 of those in wood. Monforte is the southwesternmost of the five communes and its slopes face northeast toward Serralunga d'Alba, producing Barolos with more tannin weight and dark fruit character than those from the lighter soils of La Morra to the north.

Where it grows

Monforte d'Alba rises steeply from the valley floor. The three Benevelli parcels all sit on the Monforte side facing Serralunga.

Barolo, as a DOCG appellation, binds the grape variety (Nebbiolo, exclusively), the production zone (the five communes of Barolo, Castiglione Falletto, Serralunga d'Alba, La Morra, and Monforte d'Alba), and the ageing calendar. For single-vineyard wines, the vineyard name or Menzione Geografica Aggiuntiva appears on the label alongside the commune. Le Coste di Monforte, Mosconi, and Ravera di Monforte are all vineyard-designated, so each bottle identifies both its parcel and its position within Monforte.

How it is made

The cellar

Farming excludes herbicides, chemical fertilisers, and systemic treatments. The estate works on organic principles without holding a formal certification. All grapes are hand-harvested.

In the cellar, fermentations begin spontaneously with indigenous yeasts in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks. The Barolos spend approximately 20 days in fermentation with daily pump-overs, followed by an extended submerged-cap maceration whose duration varies by vintage. Ageing moves into wooden barrels of varying sizes; current practice centres on large barrels rather than small oak. The wines are bottled without fining or filtration, which keeps them as close to their fermentation character as handling allows.

What they make

The range divides cleanly into one access tier and one serious tier.

The Langhe Nebbiolo is the early-drinking version: 100% Nebbiolo raised in stainless steel, released after eight or nine months from harvest. It carries sweet red fruit, floral lift, and a firm grip for its weight, made to be opened in the first few years rather than set aside.

Wines to try

First bottle

Start with the Barolo Le Coste di Monforte. It is the parcel closest to the Benevelli home and the one that has been in the family's daily sight since 1978. The 2021 is 100% Nebbiolo from the steep southeast-facing slope above the winery, aged in large wooden barrels and bottled without fining or filtration. On the nose: rose, violet, ripe red cherry, and a background of tobacco and earth. In the mouth: firm Nebbiolo tannins that grip without biting, lively acidity that keeps the wine moving, and a mineral finish that lingers.
