The Producer

Albert and Marta, father and daughter, lead Mas Comtal together. The family's connection to the property reaches back to 1355. Brothers Joan and Albert put the old winery back into operation with the 1993 harvest, turning the family project toward wine production.

The vineyards and wine-production process have held CCPAE organic certification since 2001. Viticulture excludes herbicides and systemic fungicides. Sexual-confusion techniques disrupt insect reproduction and replace insecticide use. Fertilization relies on organic materials of animal and vegetable origin, while pruning waste is returned to the soil. The winery is moving toward exclusive indigenous-yeast use and substantially reduced sulfites.

The hierarchy begins with young wines bottled within their first six months. Antistiana consists of single-variety wines from individual estate plots. Petrea appears only in selected vintages and uses selected grapes. Across the vineyards, Mas Comtal grows ten varieties, including the local Xarel·lo, Malvasia de Sitges, and Garnatxa Negra.

Wines

Antistiana Xarel·lo 2023 comes from the 60-year-old Els Corteis vineyard. It ferments in stainless steel at 13-15°C for 16 days, then remains on its lees in stainless steel. Within the Antistiana collection, it is one wine from one grape and one plot.

Pomell de Blancs combines 41% Xarel·lo, 38% Chardonnay, and 21% Sumoll. It spends three months on fermentation lees in underground tanks. Fresh-fruit and white-flower aromas lead into a flavorful, fruity palate with good acidity and balance.

Mas Comtal Brut Nature Reserva is made by the traditional method, with its second fermentation in the bottle. It carries fresh-fruit and floral aromas, fine-lees notes, balanced acidity, a gently integrated fine bubble, and a clean, persistent finish.

For Joan Milà Brut Nature, the lees are removed from the bottle after ageing. The bottle is then topped up exclusively with the same sparkling wine, without added sugar, preserving its zero-dosage style.
