The Producer

Santos Ortiz and Ioana Paunescu started Ego Bodegas from scratch. Ortiz is Spanish and Paunescu Romanian. They brought experience in project creation, finance, marketing and sales, then built the winery around sales and profitability with a balance among quality, image and price.

Ego Bodegas combines tradition with modern technique. Its modernist winery integrates advanced technology for clean, safe and controlled vinification. Photovoltaic panels and a battery system supply electricity for operations. The winery uses Ego, Talento and Infinito as the three words that name its wines and connect them with passion, learning and dreams without limits.

Place

Valle Hoya de Torres in Jumilla, Murcia, is the winery's location. Ego Bodegas owns 35 hectares planted principally to Monastrell. Gorú is a red wine from the Jumilla appellation.

Wines

The portfolio includes Gorú, Gorú Verde, Gorú Gold, Gorú Blue Monastrell, Gorú 38 Barrels, Gorú 18M, Marionette, Fuerza and Infinito. Gorú is a dry, medium bodied red classified as lightly oaked.

For Gorú, the grape varieties are fermented separately and macerated on their skins for 15 to 20 days at a controlled temperature no higher than 28°C. Separate fermentation keeps each variety distinct before the final wine is assembled.

In The Glass

The current Gorú style is warm and fleshy, with blueberry pie, coffee and vanilla on the nose. The palate is smooth and mouthfilling, with grip and concentrated flavor, followed by blackberry jam, clove and caramel. The finish is generous and long.

A Bottle To Understand It

Open Gorú 2023. The blend is 50% Monastrell, 30% Syrah or Shiraz and 20% Petit Verdot. Each variety is fermented separately before the blend spends four months in American oak and goes to bottle. The wine is dry, medium bodied and lightly oaked, with 14% alcohol.

Final Word

Ego Bodegas joins principally Monastrell estate vineyards to a modernist winery with controlled vinification and a portfolio that includes Gorú.
