The Producer
Juan M. Palomar founded Dominio Buenavista in 1990. The first vines came in 1992, grafted with Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay material brought from Napa Valley in California. The estate describes its wines as estate grown and estate produced.
Architect Eduardo Canals designed and directed the first construction phase of the winery, begun in 1996 and completed in 1999. The facilities expanded in 2004 with a larger vinification area and new ageing rooms.
Place
The winery stands in the municipality of Ugíjar. The estate vineyards rise above 2,500 feet and receive warm sunny days with cool nights. The site is close to the sea and sits at the foothills of the Sierra Nevada.
Mediterranean night breezes cool the vines during hot summers and delay ripening. Warm days encourage grape ripening, while cooler nights slow the process and help preserve acidity. The vineyard climate is defined by heat, night cooling and a longer ripening pattern.
Wines
Veleta Wines Privilegio 2011 is a red wine from Granada in Andalusia, produced by Dominio Buenavista SL, at 16% alcohol.
The Veleta portfolio had expanded to around twelve wines, including a pair of sparkling wines, reds, whites, a rosé and dessert wines. The estate names Cabernet Sauvignon, Noladós blends, Tempranillo, Tempranillo rosé, Vijiriega and Chardonnay among its estate grown and estate produced wines.
The 2009 Privilegio showed rich black fruit, fine tannins and balanced acidity, with dark leather fruit freshness across the palate. The same review found it more refined and nuanced than the base Tempranillo from that vintage.
Final Word
Dominio Buenavista joins Ugíjar vineyards, Napa Valley vine material and a Veleta portfolio covering several wine styles. Its wines won a silver medal in San Francisco in 2008.
