The Producer

Claude Rousselot-Pailley founded Domaine de Savagny, which is now operated by La Maison du Vigneron. The domaine carries the full range of Jura wine styles, from red wines and crémants to vin de paille, vin jaune and Macvin du Jura. The current operation keeps the Savagny name attached to a broad set of bottles, including still wines, sweet wine, yellow wine and fortified wine.

Place

Domaine de Savagny is based in Crançot/Hauteroche in the Jura. Its soils are argilo-calcareous and marly. Marl can retain moisture through the growing season, while limestone improves drainage and gives the ground a firmer mineral character. The wines carry the regional character of Jura through several formats, from Côtes du Jura reds and whites to Château-Chalon and Vin Jaune.

Wines

The red range includes Côtes du Jura Poulsard 2022, Côtes du Jura Pinot Noir 2022 and Côtes du Jura Trousseau 2022. The white wines include Côtes du Jura Tradition Blanc, Côtes du Jura Savagnin 2020, Côtes du Jura Chardonnay 2020 and L'Étoile 2023. Vin de Paille 2018 adds the Jura tradition of wine made from dried grapes.

Vin Jaune 2017 brings a golden colour, dried walnut, green walnut, curry and spice, with a fresh attack and a very long finish. It was awarded three stars and is perfectly limpid. Château-Chalon 2018 belongs to the longest lived end of the range, with potential beyond 30 years.

Macvin du Jura combines Chardonnay and Savagnin wine with grape marc and rests for at least 12 months in oak. It reaches 17.5% alcohol by volume, with honey, raisins, dried fruit, citrus peel, fig and marc in the aroma, while sugar and acidity remain balanced on the palate.

Final Word

Domaine de Savagny brings Jura's red, sparkling, straw, yellow and Macvin traditions together under one name, with argilo-calcareous and marly soils behind the range and long ageing at the most distinctive end of the cellar.
