The Producer
Domaine de Majas converted to certified organic viticulture in the middle of the 2000s with guidance from Tom Lubbe of Domaine Matassa in Calce. The wines use minimal sulfur and no commercial yeasts. Minimal sulfur means less added sulfur dioxide, while native yeasts are naturally present on grapes and in the cellar. This approach emphasizes character over standardized flavor.
Place
Domaine de Majas is based in the Languedoc region of France. Cortado carries Côtes Catalanes on the label and is a 2024 red wine. A regional designation places the bottle within a defined geographic area, while the vintage identifies the harvest year.
Wines
Cortado is the named red wine in the range, positioned between dark rosé and light red. It is made from equal parts Carignan and Grenache. Half the fruit is direct pressed, while the other half is destemmed and given two days of maceration. Direct pressing limits skin contact, while maceration extracts colour, flavour and tannin from the skins.
Cortado shows sour cherries and pomegranate over a rocky mineral backbone, with a supple texture. The Three Trees cuvées are noted for freshness, minerality and fruitiness.
Final Word
Domaine de Majas joins certified organic viticulture with minimal sulfur and no commercial yeasts, with Cortado as its clearest named expression of Carignan and Grenache.
