The Producer

Thierry Buzzo learned winemaking from his grandparents and his father, Vincent Buzzo. He later created Domaine Buzzo Bunifazziu on ancestral family land in Bonifacio. The range includes red, white and rosé wines made from Corsican grape varieties.

Ciafara Rouge is the Niellucciu and Sciaccarellu red from limestone soils in Bonifacio. Ciafara Rosé, Rocca Gianca, Cian di Fossi and Biginti Blanc complete the named range, with Minustellu and Barbarossa appearing among the grapes.

Place

Bonifacio is the Corsican home of Domaine Buzzo Bunifazziu. Ciafara Rouge is documented as coming from limestone soils in Bonifacio, and the range includes Corsican grape varieties.

The place is expressed differently across the bottles. Ciafara Rouge carries the limestone origin, while Ciafara Rosé, Rocca Gianca, Cian di Fossi and Biginti Blanc are distinguished through their grape names and documented wine styles.

Soil And Site

Ciafara Rouge comes from limestone soils in Bonifacio. Limestone can drain excess water while retaining some moisture, and the wine has an airy palate with fine supple tannins.

Story

In 2009, Thierry Buzzo created Domaine Buzzo Bunifazziu on ancestral family land. The choice established a domaine in Bonifacio under its own name, with a range that includes red, white and rosé wines. Its named bottles include Ciafara Rouge, Ciafara Rosé, Rocca Gianca, Cian di Fossi and Biginti Blanc.

Vineyards And Cellar

Harvest and ageing details are documented for Ciafara Rouge. The grapes are hand harvested, then the wine is vinified and aged in oak barrels. Hand harvesting allows bunches to be selected individually; barrel ageing exposes the wine to gradual oxygen and can add spice while softening tannin.

Wines

The range covers red, white and rosé wines. Ciafara Rouge is the Niellucciu and Sciaccarellu red, with hand harvesting and oak barrel ageing. Cian di Fossi is the Minustellu red.

Ciafara Rosé is the rosé. Rocca Gianca is the mineral white, while Biginti Blanc is the Barbarossa white. The bottles move from red grape blends to rosé freshness and floral white wines.

In The Glass

Ciafara Rouge shows red fruit with cocoa, licorice and leather, followed by an airy palate with fine supple tannins. Cian di Fossi has fine, silky tannins and a salty side.

Ciafara Rosé brings freshness and citrus. Rocca Gianca is very mineral and floral, with acidity on the finish. Biginti Blanc offers white flowers and honeydew with roundness.

A Bottle To Understand It

Ciafara Rouge is the first bottle to open from the range. It is made from 90% Niellucciu and 10% Sciaccarellu, grown on limestone soils in Bonifacio, hand harvested and aged in oak barrels. The wine has definite ageing potential, giving the bottle a place beyond immediate drinking.

Final Word

Domaine Buzzo Bunifazziu is a Bonifacio family domaine with red, white and rosé wines built around Corsican grape varieties. Ciafara Rouge joins Niellucciu and Sciaccarellu with limestone soils, hand harvesting and oak barrel ageing.
