Dog Point Vineyards

Dog Point Vineyards is a family estate in the Wairau Valley, Marlborough, founded by the former viticulturalist and winemaker of Cloudy Bay. The range runs from Sauvignon Blanc through Chardonnay and Pinot Noir to Section 94, a barrel-fermented, wild-yeast Sauvignon Blanc aged 18 months and considered one of New Zealand's most complex whites.

Who makes it

Dog Point Vineyards occupies eight proprietary blocks in the southern Wairau Valley, farmed organically by the founders who built the other name Marlborough is famous for. Ivan Sutherland and James Healy spent the 1990s at Cloudy Bay turning that label into a global reference point for Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc, then gave four years' notice and left to grow their own.

They registered Dog Point in November 2001 and released a first vintage from 2002 fruit, launching the label publicly in 2004. So is the philosophy behind the departure: slower farming, less intervention, longer ageing, and a range that asks more of Marlborough than the market thought it could give.

Where it grows

The Wairau Valley is a broad alluvial plain at the northern tip of New Zealand's South Island, sheltered by the Richmond and Wither Hills and open to afternoon winds off the Marlborough Sounds. Those winds cut the afternoon heat and keep acidity high through a long, cool ripening season. Marlborough sits at roughly the same latitude south as Bordeaux sits north, but the light is more intense, the diurnal temperature swings are wider, and the growing season rarely produces the kind of late-summer warmth that softens everything down.

For Sauvignon Blanc, the Wairau delivers aromatic intensity and mouth-watering acidity as a default. Dog Point's southern Wairau blocks push that further: slower ripening, more phenolic development, and enough structural depth for the wines to age rather than fade. Section 94 goes further still, spending 18 months in barrel before release, which is not a Marlborough timeline.

How it is made

The cellar

Organic certification covers all eight blocks. The approach in the vineyard is low-intervention: no systemic sprays, canopy managed for airflow, yields kept below what the soils would easily support. Low vigour means smaller berries, denser flavour, and more phenolic skin contact relative to juice volume.

In the cellar, Dog Point works from a stated philosophy of minimal handling. Extended barrel ageing and minimal racking are the two anchors. The estate Sauvignon Blanc is tank-fermented and bottled early to hold aromatics. Section 94 undergoes wild yeast fermentation in barrel followed by 18 months of ageing with minimal racking, which strips out the green-fruit freshness of conventional Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc and replaces it with textural weight, creamy mid-palate development, and a savoury mineral finish.

What they make

The range has four bottles.

Sauvignon Blanc is the entry and volume wine, tank-fermented and unoaked. The aromatic profile runs to pomelo, white pear, and pineapple with a subtle floral thread. On the palate, saline acidity and bright citrus drive a finish that is clean and linear. It carries more textural weight than most commercial Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc, which tends toward thinner, sharper expressions.

Wines to try

First bottle

Section 94 Sauvignon Blanc is the right first bottle. Wild yeast, 18 months in barrel, minimal racking: the method is so different from conventional Marlborough that the wine barely resembles the category label on the front. On the nose it opens with Meyer lemon and cantaloupe, then moves into mango skin, mock orange blossoms, and honeysuckle, with gunflint, blackcurrant leaf, and vanilla spice underneath. The palate sharpens with racy, mouth-watering acidity and a long savoury mineral finish.
