The Producer
The property came to François Antoine Pouget in 1748. The Pouget de Chavailles family stewarded it for over 150 years, until 1906, when ownership passed to the Guillemet family. The vineyard covers 10 hectares and produces approximately 5,000 cases annually. Since the 1983 vintage, Pouget has been vinified in a separate facility.
Place
Château Pouget is in Cantenac, within the Margaux appellation of Bordeaux. Its vineyards have sand and gravel soils, part of the siliceous gravels of Margaux. Sand and gravel are free draining soils, so water moves through them rather than pooling around vine roots.
Wines
Château Pouget is a red wine from the 1995 vintage. Its vineyard composition is 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc. The wine is aged in 30 to 50% new French oak for 12 to 18 months. A tasting note for that vintage records a dusty, tannic nose, roasted notes and leather on the palate, followed by a sweetish finish and a slightly tired impression.
Final Word
The property began as a cellar; its front was converted into a residence in the second half of the nineteenth century.
