The Producer
François Despagne represents the seventh generation of his family managing Château Grand Corbin-Despagne. The estate produces approximately 7,500 cases of wine per year across all labels. Its vineyard is planted to Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon, with Merlot occupying the largest share.
The château makes red Bordeaux from Saint-Émilion. Merlot supplies the fruit and breadth of the planting, while Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon complete the grape composition.
Place
Saint-Émilion is a Bordeaux appellation on the Right Bank, where Merlot and Cabernet Franc form the core of many red blends. At Grand Corbin-Despagne, the vineyard is divided into 53 parcels with sand mixed with clay, sandy clay, blue clay, sandstone and bits of iron.
Sand drains water quickly, while clay holds moisture for the vines. Blue clay, sandstone and iron bearing ground add further variation between parcels, so the estate does not farm one uniform soil type.
Wines
Château Grand Corbin-Despagne is the grand vin. The 2023 vintage contains 75% Merlot, 24% Cabernet Franc and 1% Cabernet Sauvignon.
The grand vin has a historical élevage of 50% new French oak barrels for an average of 15 months, with the duration varying by vintage character. Its aromatics include chocolate, licorice, espresso, flowers and dark red pit fruits, bringing together roasted notes, floral tones and dark fruit.
Final Word
Château Grand Corbin-Despagne is a Merlot led Saint-Émilion grand vin from a 53 parcel vineyard, with Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon alongside Merlot and French oak élevage shaping the finished red.
