The Producer
Château Camensac is a Bordeaux château in the Haut-Médoc appellation. It is classified as a Fifth Growth in the 1855 Bordeaux Wine Official Classification. Grapes are picked and sorted by hand, removing unwanted fruit before fermentation begins. The harvest therefore starts with manual selection before the wine reaches the cellar.
Place
Haut-Médoc is the geographic name carried by Château de Camensac, while the château name identifies the estate bottling. An appellation places a red wine within a defined Bordeaux area, so the label gives the wine both a place and a producer name before the vintage appears.
Wines
The range has two label levels. Château de Camensac is the principal red wine, made from 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Merlot. The named vintages include 2018, 2022 and 2023. The second wine was previously called La Closerie de Camensac and was renamed Second de Camensac.
New French oak ranges from 35% to 70% depending on the character and needs of the vintage. The proportion of new barrels therefore changes from year to year, adjusting the oak influence across the range.
In The Glass
Château de Camensac is balanced and powerful, with Cabernet Sauvignon contributing tannin and dark fruit while Merlot generally brings softer fruit and a rounder texture. Oak ageing can add toast and spice, while gradual oxygen exposure in barrel softens tannin over time. The changing share of new French oak adjusts the amount of oak flavour from vintage to vintage.
Final Word
Château Camensac is a Fifth Growth Haut-Médoc château with Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot at the centre of its principal red wine, supported by hand sorted fruit and extended oak ageing.
