The Producer
Château Bernadotte is a Bordeaux château making a red wine from Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot. Curt Eklund acquired the property in 1973, when it was in Pauillac. May Eliane de Lencquesaing bought it in 1997, changed the name from Château Fournas, and rebuilt the entire property.
Roederer acquired Château Bernadotte in 2007. King Power Group bought the estate in December 2012 and remains its current owner.
Place
The estate sits in Saint-Sauveur on the Pauillac boundary, while its wine carries the Haut-Médoc appellation. The property therefore occupies a border position in the Médoc, with Saint-Sauveur as its home commune and Haut-Médoc as the name on the bottle.
The place called Le Fournas belongs to the estate's earlier Pauillac footprint. That name remains attached to the second wine, Le Fournas Bernadotte.
Wines
The range has two labels. Château Bernadotte 2020 is the estate's red Haut-Médoc wine, while Le Fournas Bernadotte is the second wine. The standard blend is 51% Cabernet Sauvignon, 48% Merlot and 1% Petit Verdot.
The wine ages for 12 to 18 months in approximately 30% new French oak. Château Bernadotte 2020 has a purple colour with hints of violet. Its bouquet brings red fruit, spices and undergrowth in an expressive, sustained style. The palate is soft, round and creamy through the mid-palate, with black currant as the dominant fruit and a long, subtle finish.
Final Word
Château Bernadotte joins a Saint-Sauveur estate, the Haut-Médoc appellation, a Cabernet Sauvignon led Bordeaux blend and a second label that keeps the Le Fournas name in the range.
