The Producer
Champagne Guldkula is a négoce brand, a Champagne business that sources wines from partner houses instead of farming estate vineyards. The brand presents bottles under the name of founder Håkan Guldkula. The contents are meticulously chosen, with Guldkula Brut Réserve among the named cuvées.
In 2015, Håkan Guldkula launched the brand and brought Richard Juhlin in as curator, giving him freedom to handpick producers for the range. The business model minimizes marketing expenses to deliver very good Champagne at good prices.
Place
Champagne is the regional home of these sparkling wines. Bottle fermentation creates the mousse, and ageing on lees, the spent yeast cells, can add bread and brioche notes. The method gives Champagne its combination of bubbles and pastry scented character.
Wines
Guldkula Brut Réserve is a sparkling cuvée made from 55% Meunier, 42% Pinot Noir and 3% Chardonnay. Meunier leads the blend, Pinot Noir supplies nearly all the remaining grapes, and Chardonnay completes the composition.
The cuvée has a mild bread aroma with yellow apple, chalk and brioche. Its mature, balanced palate brings fine acidity, nut and hazelnut notes, citrus, lime, peach and caramel.
Final Word
Champagne Guldkula combines sourced Champagne, cuvées chosen by Richard Juhlin and a business model built around low marketing expenses. Brut Réserve puts Meunier at the front of a three grape blend.
