The Producer
Gilles Dumangin took over the family estate in 2000 as cellar master and winemaker. The Dumangin family has grown grapes in the region since the 1650s, and Hippolyte Dumangin crafted the family's first wine in 1884.
Gilles has systematically blocked malolactic fermentation since 2012. Preventing this conversion keeps more of the wine's original acidity and preserves aromatic character.
Place
Chigny-les-Roses is a Premier Cru village in Champagne, classified as Premier Cru since 1927. Dumangin J. Fils cultivates 29 parcels across the vineyard, giving the house a collection of individual plots rather than one continuous block.
Wines
The vineyard is planted in near equal proportions, with around 34% Meunier, 33% Pinot Noir and 33% Chardonnay. These three grape varieties support the house's Champagne wines.
Ratafia Champenois joined the lineup in 2002. It rests in second hand oak barrels from the northern Rhône valley, with some expressions spending up to 14 years in oak. Champagne bottles are hand riddled, while disgorgement and dosage are carried out in the house cellar.
Final Word
Dumangin J. Fils joins a Premier Cru village, near even plantings of Meunier, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, and Ratafia Champenois aged in second hand oak.
