Madeira

Madeira's steep Atlantic vineyards sit on volcanic soils, and its fortified wines are defined by high acidity. They range from dry to sweet, with nutty and lightly caramelized character from heat-driven wood ageing. The region also produces unfortified Madeirense and Terras Madeirenses wines.

Madeira's vineyards climb steep Atlantic slopes above deep valleys, often on small raised terraces. The soils are volcanic, fertile and acidic, with plenty of organic matter. Mild weather lasts through the year, though humidity, pergola training and high yields can make full grape maturation difficult.

The island is known for fortified wines with high acidity and a long life in bottle. Heat-driven wood ageing gives them deliberately oxidized, nutty and lightly caramelized character. Styles run from dry to sweet: Sercial, Verdelho, Boal and Malvasia follow that order, while Tinta Negra makes up more than 80 percent of the harvest and can produce every sweetness style.

Madeira also makes unfortified wines. Madeirense covers still and sparkling wines, and Terras Madeirenses is a protected geographical indication. Both names can appear on white, red and rosé wines. On a Solera wine, the date identifies the original base wine, not necessarily the bottling date.
