Basilicata has five named wine areas, including Aglianico del Vulture, Aglianico del Vulture Superiore and Grottino di Roccanova. The fullest story lies in Vulture, in northern Basilicata near Puglia and Campania. Its vineyards run up the slopes of an extinct volcano, roughly 200 to 600 metres above sea level, where cold autumn nights and slope breezes accompany a long growing season for late-ripening Aglianico.
The soils change as the vineyards rise, from ferrous soils on the lower slopes to sulphurous soils higher up. In this warm, dry area, volcanic tuff can retain moisture for vine roots. Aglianico del Vulture is usually dry and savoury, with fruit, acidity, tannin and minerality, and it can age well. It is a DOC wine, while the more age-oriented Aglianico del Vulture Superiore is DOCG. Terre dell'Alta Val d'Agri also permits rosato.
