Who makes it

Andrea Pendin studied Gastronomic Sciences before turning to the volcanic hills of Vicenza province. What he found there were old parcels with deep mineral soils. Tenuta l'Armonia is that argument: a grower-maker estate working three distinct cru parcels, all of volcanic origin, in Montecchio Maggiore.

Pendin farms the vines and makes the wine himself. The range carries the label Vulcanic Wines, a direct statement about the geology beneath the parcels. The flagship red, Gioia, comes from Cabernet Franc vines over sixty years old and receives a production method that belongs to the long, patient end of natural winemaking: extended maceration, large oak and concrete ageing, and no filtration before bottling.

Where it grows

Montecchio Maggiore sits in Vicenza province in the Veneto, inland from Venice and well removed from the Valpolicella and Soave appellations that dominate the region's export character. The soils here range from volcanic to marine in character, laid down by geological forces that left the area with an unusually varied mineral base.

That geology has direct consequences in the wine. The volcanic soils push the wines toward a savoury, mineral register with high natural acidity, a profile that differs from the richer, more fruit-forward character of Veneto zones with alluvial or clay-heavy bases. Pendin treats three separate areas within this volcanic landscape as distinct crus, varying in altitude and mineral concentration. The altitude differences affect ripening pace and aromatic development; the mineral variation between parcels shapes the textural character of the finished wine.

How it is made

The cellar

The Gioia vines grow on volcanic parcels in Montecchio Maggiore and are over sixty years old. Old vines produce smaller berries and lower yields, which concentrates both the fruit and the mineral character from the volcanic soil below.

In exceptional years, Pendin harvests with thirty percent overripe fruit in the mix, a deliberate choice that adds body and dark fruit density to the wine without sweetness, since extended maceration and long ageing are part of the wine's production. The maceration runs for at least six months in large oak barrels, a timeline far longer than standard red wine production, which extracts deep colour, phenolic density and a tannin framework that softens over the concrete ageing phase.

What they make

The estate bottles its wines under the Vulcanic Wines label. The confirmed range centres on red wine from Cabernet Franc, with Gioia as the named top wine. The range page describes an experimental character with vessel choices that can vary across releases, which means the production method for any given bottle may differ in detail from the general account.

Gioia is old-vine Cabernet Franc, over sixty years, from the volcanic cru parcels. Extended maceration gives it deep colour and a firm tannin frame. The oak and concrete vessel sequence adds layered texture without imparting obvious wood flavour. It arrives at the bottle unfiltered. When the year is strong enough, it carries a vintage label; when Pendin judges that two or more harvests will produce a better wine together, he blends and releases without a vintage designation.

Wines to try

First bottle

Gioia is the bottle to start with. Cabernet Franc from vines over sixty years old, grown on volcanic soil in Vicenza province, macerating for months rather than weeks and then resting in concrete before it is bottled without filtration. That process gives the wine a depth and textural weight that is unusual for the grape and rare in the Veneto at this price level.
