The Producer
Maksym Kushnir founded Odesos Winery as an urban winery in Odesa. He personally oversees each stage from grape selection in the vineyards through label creation. Anton Yordanov came from Bulgaria to Ukraine to produce Ukrainian wines of international class.
Place
The cellar stands at 26 Tiraspolska Street in Odesa, separate from the vineyards that supply it. Odesos leases parcels in selected Odesa region microterroirs, including sites near Prymorske village in Izmail district. The leased parcel strategy lets the winery select the best grapes each year.
Story
In 2019, Maksym Kushnir launched Odesos after seeking to adapt the urban winery models of London and Porto to Ukraine. The idea placed European city cellar practice in a Ukrainian setting, with Kushnir supervising grape selection through label creation. Anton Yordanov came from Bulgaria to produce Ukrainian wines of international class. The annual choice of grapes remains part of the operating model, with leased parcels supplying fruit from selected microterroirs.
Wines
The range moves across rosé, red and white wines. Odesos Rosé 2022 supplies the rosé bottle. Odesos Cabernet Sauvignon 2021 is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, and Odesos Chardonnay 2021 is 100% Chardonnay. Odesos Riesling 2021 adds another named white.
Some Limited Edition Cabernet and Merlot wines are matured in casks that previously held whisky or bourbon. This brings a former spirit vessel into the ageing of those cuvées.
In The Glass
Odesos Cabernet Sauvignon 2021 has a pungent nose of beetroot, earth, blood, cooked root vegetables and blackcurrant. It is medium bodied, with medium tannins and high acidity, and ends dry.
Odesos Chardonnay 2021 smells of grey pear, overripe apple, lemon, firewood and nuts. Its palate begins with slight sweetness, moves through a medium body and pleasant acidity, and finishes dry with a faint bitterness.
A Bottle To Understand It
Open Odesos Chardonnay 2021 first. It is the white bottle in the named range, alongside Odesos Rosé 2022, Odesos Cabernet Sauvignon 2021 and Odesos Riesling 2021. The Limited Edition Cabernet and Merlot wines can come next, when casks that previously held whisky or bourbon introduce a separate ageing vessel.
Final Word
Odesos makes wine in Odesa while selecting grapes from leased Odesa region parcels. The bottles cover rosé, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay and Riesling, with Limited Edition Cabernet and Merlot wines matured in casks that previously held whisky or bourbon.
