The Producer
Wine production began in 1891, when the Cossetti family established the estate in Castelnuovo Belbo, Monferrato. Clementina and Giulia Cossetti now lead current operations as the fourth generation, keeping wine production within the family.
Barbera and Moscato are the predominant native Piedmontese grape varieties. Smaller surfaces are planted with Albarossa, Cortese, Dolcetto, Brachetto and Chardonnay. The vineyard composition is led by the two native grapes, with the other varieties in supporting plantings.
Place
Castelnuovo Belbo is a village in Monferrato, Piedmont, where vineyards alternate with grasslands and woods. Exposure varies from south to southeast, and the soil is a medium mixture with a sandy marl component containing iron and magnesium. South and southeast facing vines generally receive strong sunlight during ripening.
The vineyard setting connects to the bottle through grape choice. Barbera goes into red wine, while Moscato appears in Moscato d'Asti, a lightly sparkling style.
Wines
Cossetti's wines follow the vineyard's grape proportions. Barbera and Moscato are predominant, while Albarossa, Cortese, Dolcetto, Brachetto and Chardonnay occupy smaller surfaces.
The estate produces Moscato d'Asti, an aromatic, sweet, lightly sparkling style. Barbera generally gives red wines brisk acidity and relatively low tannin. The principal wine expressions therefore move between a red wine carried by acidity and a white wine built around aroma, sweetness and gentle bubbles.
Final Word
Cossetti's vineyards combine mature vines and low yields with a predominant planting of native Barbera and Moscato. The family operation remains in Castelnuovo Belbo, with Moscato d'Asti alongside red wines based on Barbera.
