The Producer
Weingut Taferner is a family estate in Göttlesbrunn, in Carnuntum, whose wines begin in vineyards spread across the terraced Arbesthal hill country. The estate first bottled under its own name in 1988 and now cultivates 25 hectares organically and sustainably. That scale matters because Taferner can work with more than one ground type and exposure rather than treating Carnuntum as a single flavour: the wines can move from a regional appellation bottling such as Rubin Carnuntum 2022 to a site-labelled wine such as Excalibur Ried Haidacker.
Franz Taferner trained as both a winemaker and cellar master, while Karoline Taferner joined the business in 2015 after studying viticulture and oenology in Vienna and working in Australia and New Zealand. Their shared estate is therefore rooted in Göttlesbrunn vineyards but shaped by two generations of practical wine training. The bottle names make that structure visible: Carnuntum appears on Rubin, while Ried Haidacker points to a particular vineyard site.
Place
Göttlesbrunn sits in Carnuntum, a Lower Austrian wine area where Taferner’s holdings lie around the terraced Arbesthal hill country. The estate’s south- and southeast-facing vineyards receive daylight from the warmer side of the slope, a useful setting for ripening fruit intended for dry red wine. Rather than reducing the place to one soil or one bottle, Taferner works across loamy silt, sand and gravel; each material holds water and warms differently, so vineyard selection becomes part of how the range is divided.
Rubin Carnuntum 2022 carries the regional Carnuntum DAC name and is identified as Zweigelt. That label connects a grape to a regulated regional origin, whereas Excalibur Ried Haidacker narrows the focus to one named Ried, the Austrian term used for a defined vineyard site. The difference is practical in the glass: a regional wine can speak for the broader growing area, while a Ried bottling is built around the conditions of one slope and soil.
Soil And Site
Ried Haidacker rises northeast towards Schüttenberg at about 180 to 240 metres. Its vines face southwest and south, and the soils are deep and calcareous. A deep soil gives roots room to travel, while calcium-rich ground is a physical part of the vineyard rather than a decorative label detail. Excalibur Ried Haidacker is the estate’s supported single-vineyard expression of this site, so its name directs attention back to Haidacker’s height, aspect and ground.
Elsewhere, loamy silt, sand and gravel provide a different set of growing conditions. Those materials help explain why a 25-hectare estate can make both a Carnuntum wine and a vineyard wine without claiming that every parcel behaves alike. Taferner’s labels are most useful when read as a sequence from broader place to specific ground: Carnuntum on Rubin, Haidacker on Excalibur.
Story
The estate’s modern story has a clear handover thread. Franz Taferner chose wine as a vocation early, training for vineyard and cellar work; Karoline later added formal study in Vienna and professional experience in Australia and New Zealand before joining the family business in 2015. Those travels do not replace the Göttlesbrunn setting. They return to it through an estate that farms its own 25 hectares organically and sustainably, with named vineyard bottles available alongside Carnuntum-labelled wine.
Taferner also presents its winemaking as minimal intervention. In a cellar context, that position matters only through the fruit that arrives from the vineyard: organic cultivation, differing exposures and distinct soils are meant to remain legible in the bottle. Monument 2022 provides the clearest documented example of a further cellar decision, with 14 months of maturation in French wooden barrels.
Vineyards And Cellar
Organic and sustainable cultivation is the estate-wide farming base, with regional material recording organic cultivation since 2019. On the Arbesthal hill country, south and southeast exposure, loamy silt, sand and gravel ask for vineyard work that responds to site rather than one uniform recipe. The consequence is a range that can separate a broad Carnuntum expression from Haidacker’s deep calcareous slope.
In the cellar, Taferner’s stated minimal-intervention approach is paired with wine-specific choices rather than a single method for every bottle. Monument 2022 spent 14 months in French wooden barrels. Barrel maturation can add oak-derived shape and a slower frame around fruit, while the vineyard remains the starting point; the time in wood is therefore a feature of Monument, not a claim about every Taferner wine.
Wines
The supported range has three useful reference points. Rubin Carnuntum 2022 is a Zweigelt Carnuntum DAC: a regional red that joins the grape to the Carnuntum appellation. Its documented élevage and professional tasting material place it at the estate’s regional level, where fruit, acidity, tannin and oak are the structural elements to follow rather than a single named vineyard.
Monument 2022 is a separate red-wine bottling with documented vineyard, vinification and tasting material, matured for 14 months in French wooden barrels. Its role in the range is cellar-shaped: wood maturation is part of its architecture, so the wine invites attention to fruit, tannin, body and the way oak carries into the finish.
Excalibur Ried Haidacker is the site-specific branch. The Ried name ties the wine to Haidacker’s south- and southwest-facing, calcareous ground at 180–240 metres. Where Rubin begins with Carnuntum and Zweigelt, Excalibur begins with a defined vineyard; its supported sensory and composition material belongs to that individual site wine.
In The Glass
Taste Taferner’s red wines through structure before chasing a catalogue of aromas. Rubin Carnuntum 2022 is the place to follow a Carnuntum Zweigelt through fruit, acidity and tannin, with its documented élevage adding another layer to the palate. Monument 2022 introduces 14 months in French wood, so oak, body and the finish become part of the wine’s shape alongside fruit and grip.
Excalibur Ried Haidacker shifts the focus from cellar time to site. Its deep calcareous soils and south-facing slope are the physical facts behind the Ried name; the wine’s official sensory description is attached to that vineyard bottling rather than to Carnuntum as a whole. Across the three wines, the useful sequence is regional grape, barrel-matured red, then named site.
A Bottle To Understand It
Start with Monument 2022. It is the Taferner bottle with the fullest documented combination of vineyard, vinification, maturation and tasting material, and its 14 months in French wooden barrels give the palate a clear structural point of focus. Look for the relationship between fruit, oak, tannin, body and finish rather than treating the barrel ageing as a flavour on its own. Monument comes first because it brings the estate’s vineyard work and a specific cellar decision into one bottle.
Anecdote
Franz Taferner made his decision early. At fourteen, he chose to train as a winemaker and cellar master, committing himself to both sides of the work: the vineyard where grapes are grown and the cellar where wine is made. The family estate would first bottle wine in 1988, and its vineyards around Göttlesbrunn would later grow to 25 hectares under organic and sustainable cultivation. Franz’s original choice remains a compact fact in the family history: at an age when most wine careers have not yet begun, he selected the training that joins grape growing to cellar work. Karoline Taferner later entered the same family business in 2015 after studying viticulture and oenology in Vienna and gaining experience in Australia and New Zealand.
Final Word
Taferner is best read from ground upwards: Göttlesbrunn slopes, the mixed materials of the Arbesthal hill country, Haidacker’s deep calcareous soils, then labels that move from Carnuntum Zweigelt to a named Ried. Monument 2022 adds a further, tangible layer with its 14 months in French wood.
