The producer
Weingut Obrecht has been in the family for five generations. Christian and Francisca Obrecht took over the Jenins estate in 2006, dividing the work between vineyard and cellar: Francisca tends the vines, while Christian oversees fermentation and ageing. Their own parcels span approximately seven hectares, with sandy ground in Jenins and schist in nearby Malans; Demeter certification has guided the estate’s biodynamic farming since 2017.
Trocla Nera Pinot Noir is the bottle to look for. Made from Graubünden Pinot Noir, it brings red and dark fruit into a dry, structured palate with fresh acidity, integrated tannin, measured oak and a savoury finish. The cellar was rebuilt for the 2022 harvest around gravity-led handling, using a forklift and crane to avoid pumps when moving wine.

Weingut Obrecht
At A Glance
Weingut Obrecht is a fifth-generation family estate in Jenins, Graubünden, run by Francisca and Christian Obrecht. Francisca works the vineyards while Christian handles the cellar, separating the growing of Pinot Noir fruit from its fermentation and ageing; Trocla Nera Pinot Noir is the bottle where that division is easiest to taste.
The Producer
Christian and Francisca Obrecht took over Weingut zur Sonne from Christian IV and Elsbeth Obrecht in 2006. Christian trained as a winegrower and studied oenology in Wädenswil, while Francisca trained in agriculture and biotechnology. Their roles meet in the finished wine: Francisca’s work begins in the estate parcels, and Christian carries the grapes through fermentation and élevage in the Jenins cellar.
Place
Jenins is the home address, but the estate’s vineyards also extend to Malans within Graubünden. Trocla Nera is Pinot Noir from the region, so the place named on the bottle is not decoration: it gathers fruit from the estate’s local vineyards into a wine shaped in Jenins rather than a generic Swiss red.
The estate owns approximately seven hectares and, by 2023, vinified fruit from almost 15 hectares including organically grown purchased grapes. That wider cellar intake enlarges the working range, while the owned Jenins and Malans parcels remain the ground under Francisca Obrecht’s direct vineyard care.
Soil And Site
The estate’s Jenins parcels have sandy soils; its Malans parcels sit on schist. These are two distinct vineyard grounds rather than interchangeable acreage, so Pinot Noir can arrive at the cellar from sites with different physical conditions before Christian Obrecht decides how each lot is fermented and aged.
Biodynamic farming under Demeter standards has been part of that site work since certification in 2017. The certification fixes a shared framework for the estate parcels, linking sandy Jenins and schist-rich Malans to one farming practice before the grapes become wine.
Story
The 2006 handover put Christian and Francisca Obrecht in charge of a family estate with five generations behind it. They kept the Jenins base while dividing the work clearly between vines and cellar, then added Demeter certification in 2017; the result is a Pinot Noir such as Trocla Nera whose vineyard origin and cellar handling are both named parts of its story.
Their cellar grew alongside the work. By 2023, the Obrechts were vinifying nearly 15 hectares of grapes, including purchased fruit grown organically, while maintaining their own vineyards biodynamically. That combination places a small family holding inside a broader cellar operation, with Trocla Nera providing a concrete view of how regional Pinot Noir is brought through the house.
Vineyards And Cellar
Francisca Obrecht leads the vineyard work across the estate’s sandy Jenins and schist Malans parcels, farmed biodynamically under Demeter standards. The consequence begins with the fruit: vineyard decisions are made before harvest, then the grapes reach Christian Obrecht for fermentation and ageing rather than being treated as anonymous bulk wine.
The newer cellar was designed for work on one level with gravity in mind. Christian uses a forklift and crane to move wine and avoid pumps, a practical choice that reduces mechanical transfers during cellar work. Trocla Nera is also documented as spontaneously fermented and aged, joining that low-intervention handling sequence to a Pinot Noir with acidity, tannin and oak in its profile.
Wines
Trocla Nera Pinot Noir is the named wine with the fullest available picture. Its Romansh name means “black grape,” while the bottle itself is a Graubünden Pinot Noir: red and dark fruit meet fresh acidity, integrated tannin, oak and a savoury register as the wine develops.
This is not a lightweight fruit-only red. Published notes describe a shaped Pinot Noir with fruit at the front and structure underneath, where tannin provides grip and oak adds another layer rather than covering the grape. The estate also vinifies a larger volume of regional fruit, but Trocla Nera is the bottle with enough documented detail to show the house’s red-wine work without inventing a hierarchy for the wider range.
In The Glass
Trocla Nera opens in the register of red and darker fruit, then moves across the palate with acidity keeping the fruit lively. Pinot Noir brings the wine’s core perfume and body; spontaneous fermentation, ageing and oak contribute shape around it, so the middle feels more layered than simply juicy.
The structure is firm but integrated rather than drying. Tannin supplies grip, savoury notes emerge with development, and the finish persists after the fruit has receded. Older published tasting evidence also supports its capacity to move beyond primary fruit, making bottle age a useful part of the experience rather than an afterthought.
A Bottle To Understand It
Start with Trocla Nera Pinot Noir, in the most recent vintage available. It is the clearest documented meeting point of Graubünden Pinot Noir, the Obrechts’ vineyard work and Christian Obrecht’s cellar practice: red and dark fruit, fresh acidity, firm tannin, oak and a savoury finish. Drink it with food that can meet its grip—roast duck, mushrooms or a browned veal dish—and it will show why the estate’s sandy and schist parcels are kept distinct before their fruit reaches the cellar.
Anecdote
Christian and Francisca Obrecht spent five years planning and building a new cellar, then inaugurated it in time for the 2022 harvest. The building was arranged for work on a single level, with gravity guiding the movement of grapes and wine. Christian described using a forklift and a crane so he could avoid pumps during cellar work. The harvest therefore entered a new working space at the exact point when the year’s Pinot Noir and other grapes needed to be received, fermented and moved into ageing vessels.
Final Word
Weingut Obrecht offers a grounded way into Graubünden Pinot Noir: fifth-generation family work, biodynamic estate parcels in Jenins and Malans, and a cellar built to move wine with gravity rather than pumps. Trocla Nera brings those elements into a red with fruit, acidity, tannin, oak and savoury length.
