The producer
Weingut Lebenshilfe farms 23 hectares on the Mittelhaardt around Bad Dürkheim, including nearly three hectares of recultivated terraces. Thirty-five people with disabilities work alongside seven skilled professionals; hand harvest and Bioland cultivation connect that shared vineyard work to a range led by Riesling, with Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris, St. Laurent and Pinot Noir alongside it.
The dry litre Riesling is fermented in steel, keeping citrus, apple and lively acidity at the centre of a clean, dry finish. Further up the range, named-site wines receive individual wood ageing, while the off-dry Riesling carries riper citrus and orchard fruit through a rounder palate. It is a producer whose bottles move clearly from easy table wine to wines shaped by named vineyards and longer cellar treatment.

The Producer
Weingut Lebenshilfe is the wine operation of Dürkheimer Werkstätten around Bad Dürkheim. Its stated purpose includes creating work that supports the personal development of people with disabilities, but the work is rooted in a functioning 23-hectare estate: vines are farmed, grapes are harvested by hand and wines run from one-litre Riesling to named-site bottlings. Thirty-five people with disabilities work alongside seven skilled professionals, with the team described as working as equals. That shared, largely manual work reaches the bottle through estate-grown fruit rather than a separate social project attached to purchased wine.
Place
The estate sits on the Mittelhaardt, the central stretch of the Pfalz around Bad Dürkheim. Riesling leads the planting, while Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris, St. Laurent and Pinot Noir extend the range into white, red and sparkling wine. This mix gives the winery a practical Pfalz shape: Riesling can appear dry or off-dry, while the Pinots and red varieties carry the work into bottles with different body, fruit and tannin.
Soil And Site
Nearly three hectares of the holding are recultivated terraces, recovered from old vineyard ground near Bad Dürkheim. Terraces require work by hand, so they belong to the estate’s manual vineyard practice rather than serving as a decorative backdrop. Michelsberg, Spielberg and Hochbenn are among the named sites; their names matter most on the site-wine tier, where vineyard designation accompanies more individual élevage and a more detailed account of texture, aroma, acidity or tannin.
Story
The project began with nature conservation and the recovery of old terraced vineyards. From that vineyard work came a winery operated for more than 30 years by people with and without disabilities. The sequence remains visible in the present range: restored terraces are part of the 23 hectares, hand work remains central, and the wines move from uncomplicated litre bottles to site wines that receive separate wood ageing. The wine business grew out of work in the vines, not from a label applied after the fact.
Vineyards And Cellar
The estate is documented as farming under Bioland cultivation and harvesting by hand. Hand-picked fruit allows the team to bring its vineyard work into the cellar in small, physical steps rather than treating harvest as an industrial handover. The cellar then separates wine styles by role. The dry and off-dry litre Rieslings are made in steel tanks, preserving citrus and orchard-fruit character without oak flavour. Site wines receive individual wood ageing, a choice that can add texture and a broader frame around acidity, fruit or tannin. Estate-grown sparkling wine adds another use for the same vineyard base, with mousse rather than still-wine texture carrying the wine across the palate.
Wines
The range begins with one-litre Rieslings designed for direct drinking. The dry version is 100% Riesling, fermented in steel and bottled with 3.7 g/l residual sugar; its low sweetness leaves acidity and fruit at the front. The halbtrocken version is also steel-tank made, but its extra residual sugar changes the middle of the palate, making room for riper fruit and a rounder texture while acidity keeps the finish fresh.
Above those everyday whites, named-site wines give individual vineyards a larger role. Riesling is central, but the official site-wine descriptions also make room for varieties whose wood ageing and grape character can alter body, tannin and aroma. Pinot Blanc and Pinot Gris provide white-wine texture beyond Riesling’s acidity; St. Laurent and Pinot Noir bring red fruit, savoury notes and grip. The documented Wachenheimer Schlossberg Riesling shows the dry end of this tier: the 2014 carried 12.5% alcohol, 1.1 g/l residual sugar and 8.8 g/l acidity.
In The Glass
The off-dry litre Riesling opens with ripe citrus and orchard fruit. Its residual sugar rounds the palate rather than turning it sweet, because marked acidity carries the fruit through to a fresh finish. It is the softer of the two basic Riesling styles, with weight concentrated in the centre of the mouth.
The mature 2014 Wachenheimer Schlossberg Riesling moves in another direction. Its low residual sugar and high acidity produce a firm, dry shape, while the tasting note records developed Riesling character with mineral and citrus notes. Alcohol gives the wine body, acidity supplies a long line through the palate, and the finish stays dry rather than broad with sweetness.
A Bottle To Understand It
Choose the dry one-litre Riesling first. It is 100% Riesling, fermented in steel tanks and bottled at 3.7 g/l residual sugar, so it shows the winery’s everyday work without oak or site-wine framing. Citrus and apple arrive first, lively acidity keeps the body light on its feet, and the finish is clean and dry. The litre format also makes the bottle useful at a table: it is a straightforward Riesling made from the estate’s central grape, with fruit, acidity and texture easy to recognise.
Anecdote
Before it became a full wine operation, the project around Bad Dürkheim began with nature conservation and the recovery of old terraced vineyards. Those terraces were brought back into cultivation by hand, and nearly three hectares now sit within the estate’s 23-hectare holding. The vineyard project developed into a working winery where people with and without disabilities farm and make wine together. Today, 35 people with disabilities work alongside seven skilled professionals, while the organisation describes the team as equals. The work has continued for more than 30 years, with vineyards such as Michelsberg, Spielberg and Hochbenn now part of the estate’s named holdings.
Final Word
Weingut Lebenshilfe makes its clearest statement in the distance between a steel-tank litre Riesling and a wood-aged site wine. Both begin in the same manually worked Pfalz estate; the bottle chosen determines whether citrus and acidity take the lead, or whether a named vineyard, wood and longer structure take over.
