The producer
Founded in 1960 and based in Östringen-Tiefenbach, Weingut Heitlinger farms about 80 hectares in Baden’s Kraichgau. More than 80 percent of the vineyards are planted to Pinot varieties, so Pinot Noir, Pinot Blanc and Pinot Gris lead a dry range that also includes Chardonnay, Auxerrois and Riesling. Limestone marl, sandstone, loess and clay are kept distinct through parcel selection, allowing wines to move from broad estate bottlings to named sites such as Königsbecher and Wormsberg.
The estate has been certified organic since 2010 and has worked to biodynamic principles since 2014; hand harvesting, optical sorting and gravity-fed must handling aim to bring clean fruit into the cellar. Königsbecher Pinot Noir GG, from Odenheim, is spontaneously fermented in wood and aged for 18 months in new and used barriques. In the documented 2015, ripe cherry, dark berries and spice met a broad, dry palate, velvet-textured tannin and a long fruit-led finish.

Weingut Heitlinger
At A Glance
Weingut Heitlinger works from Östringen-Tiefenbach in Baden’s Kraichgau, where Pinot varieties occupy more than 80 percent of its vineyards. Founded by Albert Heitlinger in 1960, the estate now farms about 80 hectares and makes roughly 580,000 bottles a year. Limestone marl, sandstone, hand-picked fruit and dry Burgundy varieties give the range its shape, from everyday estate wines to named vineyard bottlings.
The Producer
Heitlinger is owned by the Heiler and Jacklin families and has been a VDP member since 2012. Claus Burmeister leads the business and Daniel Rupp is cellarmaster. Pinot Noir, Pinot Blanc and Pinot Gris sit at the centre because the estate’s Kraichgau sites are planted predominantly to the Pinot family; Chardonnay, Auxerrois and Riesling widen the white-wine range.
Place
Tiefenbach lies in the Kraichgau, a hilly part of northern Baden with vineyards spread around villages including Odenheim, Hilsbach and Tiefenbach. Those village names matter on the label because Heitlinger moves from broad Gutswein and Ortswein bottlings towards Reserve wines and VDP.Grosse Lage wines tied to individual sites. Königsbecher Pinot Noir GG, for example, comes from the Königsbecher vineyard in Odenheim rather than from a blended estate parcel.
Soil And Site
The vineyard ground includes limestone marl in several forms, coloured marl, Stuben sandstone, loess and clay. This mix gives the estate practical reasons to keep parcels separate: soil and microclimate are assessed before harvest, then fruit is sorted for individual wines. Pinot varieties are the dominant planting across these slopes, while sites such as Eichelberg, Spiegelberg, Wormsberg, Schellenbrunnen and Heinberg carry the names used for the top vineyard bottlings.
Story
Albert Heitlinger founded the estate in 1960. Today, Heitlinger and nearby Burg Ravensburg remain separate legal estates, though they share management and vinify their wines in a Tiefenbach winery built in 2012. The shared cellar brings two estates under one roof for harvest and élevage, while each name continues to appear on its own bottles.
The estate’s scale has not displaced its focus on parcel work. With about 80 hectares and a production of around 580,000 bottles, it still hand harvests, selects fruit by soil and microclimate, and builds much of its range around varieties associated with Burgundy. The result is a line-up in which a dry Pinot Blanc, Chardonnay or Pinot Noir can move from a regional expression to a vineyard-specific wine without leaving the Kraichgau.
Vineyards And Cellar
Heitlinger became certified organic in 2010 and began working according to biodynamic principles in 2014. Compost, horn manure and horn silica preparations, and work to encourage flora and fauna are part of the vineyard programme; sheep, drones, robots and manual labour are used according to the season. These choices concern the condition and timing of the fruit before it reaches the cellar.
Grapes are hand picked, with optical sorting used after harvest. Gravity-fed must handling and reduced pumping limit mechanical movement of the juice, while a screw press is used in the cellar. For the red Königsbecher Pinot Noir GG, spontaneous fermentation in wood and 18 months in new and used barriques bring oak spice and a broader texture to Pinot Noir fruit.
Wines
The range begins with Heitlinger-labelled wines including Riesling, Pinot Blanc, Auxerrois, Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir, rosé and red or white blends. These dry wines establish the estate’s grape vocabulary: citrus and fresh fruit in the whites, or cherry fruit and tannin in Pinot Noir. Blanc de Noir Brut, made from Pinot Meunier, adds a sparkling wine with mousse to the line-up.
Reserve bottlings take in Hilsbach Chardonnay, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris, Pinot Meunier and Pinot Noir, alongside Hassapfel Auxerrois. Above them, the VDP.Grosse Lage wines isolate named sites: Eichelberg Pinot Blanc GG, Spiegelberg Pinot Gris GG, Königsbecher and Wormsberg Pinot Noir GG, Schellenbrunnen Riesling GG and Heinberg Chardonnay GG. The progression is structural as well as nominal: individual vineyard wines receive a narrower grape-and-site focus, while the broader wines present the estate’s dry style across several parcels.
In The Glass
The clearest documented taste picture comes from Königsbecher Pinot Noir GG 2015. Ripe cherry, dark berries and spice lead the aroma; on the palate, the wine is broad and dry, with 13 percent alcohol, 5.9 grams per litre of acidity and very low residual sugar. Its 18 months in barriques show as oak seasoning around the fruit, while velvet-textured tannin carries the wine into a long, fruit-led finish.
Across the estate, Pinot Noir supplies cherry fruit, savoury spice and tannin; Pinot Blanc and Pinot Gris bring the body and texture of the white range; Chardonnay and Auxerrois extend the creamier end of it; Riesling supplies citrus and acidity. The wines are predominantly dry, so fruit is framed by structure rather than sweetness.
A Bottle To Understand It
Begin with Königsbecher Pinot Noir GG when the aim is to meet Heitlinger through its defining grape and a named Kraichgau vineyard. It is a dry, single-vineyard Pinot Noir from Odenheim, fermented spontaneously in wood and matured for 18 months in barriques. In the documented 2015, ripe cherry, dark berries and spice sit over a broad palate; velvet-textured tannin and acidity keep the fruit moving through a long finish. It brings together Pinot planting, parcel selection and extended oak ageing in one bottle.
Anecdote
In 2010, Heitlinger achieved certified organic viticulture across an estate of about 80 hectares. Four years later, in 2014, it moved to biodynamic principles while producing around 580,000 bottles annually. The vineyard work now includes horn manure and horn silica preparations, composting and measures intended to support flora and fauna. The equipment is not limited to one era: depending on the season, the rows may involve sheep, drones, robots and people working by hand. The sequence runs from certification in 2010 to biodynamic practice in 2014, with all of those tools still part of the vineyard programme.
Final Word
Heitlinger is worth seeking out for dry Kraichgau wines in which Pinot varieties lead, named sites sharpen the range, and practical vineyard and cellar decisions remain visible in the glass. Start with Königsbecher for red Pinot Noir, then move sideways through Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris, Chardonnay or Riesling to see how broadly the estate works its hills.
