The Producer
In Langenlois, Willi Bründlmayer leads the family estate with Edwige Bründlmayer, Thomas Klinger and Master of Wine Andreas Wickhoff. Grüner Veltliner is the principal grape, while Riesling also has a central place. Chardonnay and Burgundy varieties are specialties.
Synthetic fertilizers have been excluded since 1979. The vineyards have been farmed biologically and organically with LACON certification since 2015. When old vineyards are cleared, the fields can remain fallow for several years so the soil recovers. The oldest vines are more than 90 years old.
Willi Bründlmayer sets the vines just above the ground so the grapes receive soil heat. At harvest, every bunch is hand-selected into small crates. Healthy fruit is separated from overripe and shrivelled grapes. Musts ferment cool in stainless steel or wood to retain aroma. Grapes, must and wine move through the cellar by gravity. Indigenous yeasts and Austrian oak of varying sizes are used in vinification and ageing.
Place
Langenlois is the main town of the Kamptal region, and the vineyards lie mostly nearby. Riesling grows particularly well on the poor rocky soils of Steinmassel and Heiligenstein. The estate owns 12 hectares in the centre of Zöbinger Heiligenstein, where the soil is approximately 270 million-year-old Permian desert sandstone.
Wines
The range includes the single-vineyard Ried Heiligenstein 1ÖTW Riesling, Grüner Veltliner Kamptal Terrassen from several terraced vineyards, and Grüner Veltliner bottles from Ried Spiegel 1ÖTW Vincent and Langenloiser Alte Reben.
Ried Heiligenstein Riesling 2023 carries the 1ÖTW Erste Lage and Kamptal DAC classifications. It smells of yellow tropical fruit, peach and candied orange zest. The palate is juicy and lively in acidity, with fruit sweetness and blossom honey on the finish. It is already ready to drink.
Kamptal Terrassen Grüner Veltliner 2024 combines higher, stonier terraces that contribute aromatic expression, acidity, stone fruit and mineral notes with lower loess terraces that contribute body and ripeness. Fermented at 15 to 20°C, it shows meadow herbs, mango, pineapple and orange peel, followed by passion fruit, a firm palate and a persistent finish.
Bründlmayer Brut is a five-grape blend of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc and Grüner Veltliner. Only the heart of the must is used. It ferments and undergoes malolactic fermentation in stainless steel before transfer to used Austrian oak with about 10% lees. Secondary fermentation takes place in bottle, followed by 18 months of yeast contact before remuage. White bread, brioche and stewed apricot lead into a full-bodied, round, juicy palate with smooth yellow fruit and balanced sweetness.
Final Word
At Weingut Bründlmayer, Grüner Veltliner and Riesling are central to the wines of Langenlois. The range also includes Heiligenstein Riesling, terraced Kamptal whites and a five-grape bottle-fermented Brut.
