The Producer
In 1992, Piera Martellozzo was handed a small wine estate in the Padua area and a single instruction from her father Mario: keep it going. She did more than that. Over the following years she shifted the producer's entire gravity eastward, from the Veneto into Friuli Venezia Giulia, and in 1998 launched the first certified organic wine range under the family name. The brand she built carries her name and the founding year together: Piera 1899.
The estate is now headquartered in San Quirino, in the Province of Pordenone, in the northeastern tip of Italy. The founding dates to Giovanni Martellozzo in 1899, and the lineage runs Giovanni to Mario to Piera. Three generations, one deliberate move toward a cooler, more aromatic part of Italy, and a range built around that choice.
Place
Friuli Venezia Giulia sits in Italy's northeastern corner, bordered by Austria to the north, Slovenia to the east, and the Adriatic to the south. San Quirino and the Province of Pordenone occupy the western part of the region, an area of alpine foothills, river plains, and gravel subsoils that produce some of Italy's most aromatic white wines.
The deliberate migration from Veneto to Friuli was a decision about grape character. Friuli's climate, cooled by alpine air from the north and moderated by the Adriatic, allows Sauvignon Blanc, Ribolla Gialla, and Pinot Grigio to ripen slowly, holding acidity and amplifying aromatic compounds that would be lost in warmer zones. The Friuli DOC label that appears on Terre Magre bottles covers this broad regional character and permits these varietal whites.
Soil And Site
The Terre Magre vineyards sit in the Magredi, a gravelly subzone of Friuli Venezia Giulia where river-deposited white pebbles cover the vineyard floor. Those pebbles absorb heat during the day and release it slowly after sunset, widening the gap between daytime and overnight temperatures. That thermal swing pushes aromatic development in the grapes: the vines work through warm afternoons and cool nights, accumulating fruit and herb compounds without sacrificing acidity. The name Terre Magre translates directly from this terrain.
Story
Giovanni Martellozzo founded the company in the Padua area of the Veneto in 1899. His son Mario developed it over the following decades and eventually handed management to his daughter Piera in 1992. The brief was continuity. What Piera built was transformation.
The move from Veneto to Friuli Venezia Giulia was not a single act but a gradual reorientation of where the estate sourced, what it farmed, and what it put on its labels. By 1998, Piera had committed the producer to certified organic viticulture, launching the first organic range under the family name at a point when most Italian producers were still years away from that decision. The Piera 1899 brand, and the Terre Magre line within it, were both products of that six-year rethinking. The founding year remained visible on every label.
Today, Piera 1899 sells in Italy, the United States, and Northern Europe. The market reach followed the range: aromatic Friuli whites made without oak, without intervention, and from grapes sourced through long-standing relationships with individual vineyard families.
Vineyards And Cellar
Martellozzo works with vineyard tenders across Friuli Venezia Giulia through a relationship-driven sourcing model. The producer invests time in knowing the people who farm the vines, their families, and their parcels before committing to fruit. That approach shapes selection quality more than scale.
Across the Terre Magre line, all wines are vinified in stainless steel. Fermentation runs at controlled temperatures, a technique that preserves the volatile aromatic compounds in Sauvignon Blanc and Ribolla Gialla that would otherwise dissipate in a warmer ferment. After fermentation, the wine remains on its fine lees, which builds weight and aromatic persistence without adding oak character. The wines carry grape and place forward rather than cellar intervention.
Wines
The Terre Magre range is built around three mono-varietal whites, each vinified in stainless steel and labelled under the Friuli DOC appellation.
Terre Magre Sauvignon is the flagship. At 12% alcohol, it opens with passion fruit, white peach, sage, tomato leaf, and pepper, with a mineral thread that runs through the mid-palate. The palate is fleshy and aromatic, with close alignment between nose and mouth.
Terre Magre Ribolla Gialla keeps the indigenous Friulian grape's signature character: high acidity, citrus-forward aromatics, and a lean, bright finish. Stainless steel allows the variety's natural sharpness to come through without softening.
Terre Magre Pinot Grigio follows the same cellar approach, stainless steel vinification preserving the grape's clean fruit and gentle body.
A broader portfolio exists under additional Martellozzo sub-labels, including Prosecco production, but tasting detail for those lines is limited and they sit outside the Terre Magre line.
In The Glass
The Terre Magre whites arrive with immediacy. The Sauvignon opens with a burst of herb and tropical fruit, sage and pepper rising first, then white peach and passion fruit underneath. On the palate the wine is fuller than the nose suggests, fleshy and aromatic, with mineral grip from the Friuli subsoil tightening the mid-palate and carrying through to a clean, herb-edged finish. Acidity keeps the weight in check.
The Ribolla Gialla moves in a different direction: tighter, more citrus-driven, with a sharper acid line and less tropical character. The finish is brief and clean. The Pinot Grigio sits between the two in weight, soft fruit on the nose and a round, easy palate.
All three wines reflect the cellar approach: no oak, no intervention, grape and place doing the work.
A Bottle To Understand It
Terre Magre Sauvignon, Friuli DOC. This is a stainless-steel Sauvignon Blanc fermented at controlled temperatures and aged on fine lees in the northeastern Friuli Venezia Giulia region, from Magredi vineyards where gravel soils drive aromatic intensity through thermal contrast. The wine is bright straw-yellow with greenish shades, 12% alcohol, and opens with sage, pepper, tomato leaf, white peach, and passion fruit. The palate is fleshy and aromatic with mineral grip from the Friuli subsoil and a clean, herb-edged finish. It is the most clearly Friuli bottle in the range, the most documented, and the sharpest single expression of what the producer does: varietal, unadorned, place-driven.
Anecdote
In 1992, Mario Martellozzo called his daughter Piera into the family estate in the Padua area and asked her to take over. The estate was small. The instruction was simple. Piera was thirty-one. What Mario could not have anticipated was that his daughter would spend the next six years questioning nearly every assumption behind the existing business. She shifted the producer's focus from the Veneto to Friuli Venezia Giulia, rebuilt relationships with vineyard families in the northeast, and in 1998 committed the estate to certified organic wine production, a decision that put the family name on one of Italy's earliest certified organic ranges. When she built the Piera 1899 brand around herself, she kept the founding year in the name: Piera 1899. Giovanni's date, Piera's direction.
Final Word
Martellozzo moved from the Veneto to Friuli Venezia Giulia, adopted organic production, and built the Terre Magre range around aromatic regional whites. The Terre Magre Sauvignon is where that argument is clearest, a wine that carries grape, place, and the gravel of the Magredi floor in one unfussy glass.
