Stellenbosch Vineyards
At A Glance
Stellenbosch Vineyards is based at Welmoed Farm on Baden Powell Drive in Lynedoch, Stellenbosch. Its cellar works with a dedicated viticulturist and selected grape growers across several vineyard sites, so the wines are shaped by a sourcing network rather than one contiguous estate vineyard.
Its named portfolio includes Stellenbosch Vineyards Collection of Fine Wines, Welmoed, Arniston Bay and Versus. The most fully documented current wine is Welmoed Shiraz Pinotage: a 70% Shiraz, 30% Pinotage red whose dark fruit, pepper and oak profile provides a useful view into the Welmoed cellar.
The Producer
Welmoed Farm is the physical base, while selected growers supply fruit from more than one site. That division of work matters in the bottle: the cellar can build several labels from different vineyards, and the label family signals the intended wine style more clearly than an estate-vineyard claim would.
Senior winemaker Bernard Claassen focuses principally on primary production in the Welmoed cellar. The producer describes that cellar work as minimalist and gentle, an approach intended to let the vineyard material and the wine express their potential without making the cellar treatment the loudest element in the glass.
Place
The producer sits in Lynedoch, Stellenbosch, within South Africa’s Western Cape. Welmoed is both the farm name and a wine range name, so the connection appears directly on bottles: a Welmoed label links the wine to the producer’s Stellenbosch base even when fruit is drawn from its selected-grower network.
Stellenbosch Vineyards does not present every wine as the result of one named parcel. Its multi-site sourcing allows a range that extends beyond a single farm, while the Welmoed cellar remains the place where that fruit is turned into finished wine.
Soil And Site
The available record identifies several vineyard sites but does not specify soils, slopes or elevations for the Welmoed Shiraz Pinotage. What is clear is the working structure: a dedicated viticulturist and selected growers supply fruit to one cellar, so site selection precedes fermentation and blending at Welmoed.
That makes the documented blend especially useful. Shiraz and Pinotage are brought together after grapes have been sourced through this network, producing a red with a broader dark-fruit and spice profile than a description of the farm alone could establish.
Story
The business changed names before returning to the one now on the label. In 2004, Stellenbosch Vineyards merged with Vinfruco to establish The Company of Wine People; in 2013, the company returned to the Stellenbosch Vineyards name and a new corporate identity. Welmoed kept the farm’s historical name in the portfolio, preserving a direct line between the cellar base and an accessible bottle range.
In 2018, French wine group AdVini acquired a majority share in Stellenbosch Vineyards. The acquisition included the winemaking facility and logistics centre, and the company’s brands were then distributed in more than 30 countries. The result is a producer with a Stellenbosch cellar and a portfolio built for distribution well beyond the farm gate.
Vineyards And Cellar
Selected growers and a dedicated viticulturist are central to the vineyard side of the operation. This lets the cellar draw on fruit from several sites, while support is directed toward farms attentive to economic, human and environmental factors; the consequence is a producer whose range is assembled from managed relationships as well as vineyard ownership.
In the cellar, Stellenbosch Vineyards follows Integrated Production of Wine criteria and is Fairtrade certified. Those standards sit beside its stated minimalist, gentle approach. For Welmoed Shiraz Pinotage, fermentation and skin maceration run for five days at 23–25°C; skin contact is the step that draws colour and tannin from red-grape skins into the wine.
Wines
The portfolio has four named strands: Stellenbosch Vineyards Collection of Fine Wines, Welmoed, Arniston Bay and Versus. The available material does not support a technical tasting account of each, but it does establish their different roles: Welmoed is positioned as approachable and value-driven, while each bottle of Arniston Bay sold contributes to SANCCOB’s coastal-seabird conservation work.
Welmoed Shiraz Pinotage supplies the clearest wine detail. The current 2025 wine combines 70% Shiraz with 30% Pinotage, then spends five days fermenting and macerating on skins. The blend brings blackberry, dark cherry and blackcurrant fruit together with white pepper, mint, chocolate and oak, making it a dry red with fruit, spice and savoury oak material rather than a simple list of grape names.
In The Glass
Welmoed Shiraz Pinotage opens on dark berry fruit: blackberry, dark cherry and blackcurrant. The 2024 description adds violet, rosemary and liquorice, which brings a floral and herbal edge around the darker fruit rather than changing the wine into a lighter-bodied style.
On the palate, five days of skin maceration supplies colour and tannin grip, while the Shiraz-Pinotage blend carries pepper, mint, chocolate and oak through the middle. The finish is shaped by dark fruit and spice, with oak adding a toasted note after the fruit has settled. Serve it as a red where body, tannin and ripe black fruit are the main structural cues.
A Bottle To Understand It
Choose the 2025 Welmoed Shiraz Pinotage. It is a 70% Shiraz, 30% Pinotage blend made at the Welmoed cellar with five days of fermentation and skin maceration at 23–25°C. Its blackberry, dark cherry and blackcurrant fruit, white pepper, mint, chocolate and oak show how the producer’s selected-grower model becomes a finished, dry Stellenbosch red.
This bottle comes first because its grapes, method and taste are all documented. It also connects Welmoed Farm’s name to a wine with enough tannin, dark fruit and oak character to make the cellar’s work tangible.
Anecdote
On 23 October 2018, a fire broke out in Stellenbosch Vineyards’ original 5,000-square-metre warehouse. The facility held just over three million bottles of wine, placing an extraordinary volume of finished wine in one building on the day of the fire. The event concerned the logistics side of the producer rather than the Welmoed fermentation cellar, but it affected the facility used to move its bottled wines through the market. On 5 March 2020, Stellenbosch Vineyards inaugurated a new Logistics Hub. The replacement opened after the fire, two dates linking a warehouse full of bottles in October 2018 with a new hub in March 2020.
Final Word
Stellenbosch Vineyards is best understood through the relationship between Welmoed Farm, selected growers and the Welmoed cellar. The Shiraz Pinotage makes that relationship concrete: sourced fruit, five days on skins, then a dry red of blackberry, pepper, tannin and oak.
