Sca Vignoble de la Voie d'Héraclès
At A Glance
Sca Vignoble de la Voie d’Héraclès is a Gard cooperative of 80 winegrowers farming 1,200 hectares. Its wines carry the flexible IGP Pays d’Oc designation, while the group’s listed address is in Vergèze and its newer production cellar is in Codognan. That scale allows many growers’ fruit to be handled in one cellar, with organic farming central to the work.
The Producer
Héraclès brings together vineyards rather than presenting one family’s single holding. Jean Philippe Jullien is its current president, and the cooperative reports that 95% of the vineyard area it vinifies is organic. The result is a large-scale Pays d’Oc operation whose bottles can combine broad regional sourcing with a shared approach to farming and cellar work.
Place
The vineyards lie chiefly in the Gard, in southern France, and the Héraclès name follows an ancient Greek route traced in the seventh century BC and later known to the Romans as the Via Domitia. IGP Pays d’Oc gives the cooperative room to work beyond a narrowly defined village appellation, so grape variety can be a clear part of the label and the wine’s character.
Vergèze remains the listed address, while Codognan is the site of the newer winery. That division matters in practical terms: grapes arrive from a wide cooperative vineyard base and are made in a purpose-built cellar designed to handle substantial harvest volumes.
Soil And Site
A complete soil map is not established across Héraclès’s 1,200 hectares. For Spring Village Syrah Organic 2023, however, the documented ground is principally clay with limestone components. Clay can hold water through dry periods while limestone contributes a stony component to the site; in this Syrah-led bottle, the reported outcome is ripe dark fruit carried by a medium-bodied palate rather than a heavy, sweet impression.
Story
The cooperative traces its organic project to 1994, when four growers converted 25 hectares northeast of the Perrier spring. That early conversion began with a small area rather than the whole vineyard base, then grew into the producer’s current report of 95% organic vinified area. One grower is also reported to farm biodynamically, adding another farming approach within the cooperative.
The work extended beyond vine rows. Héraclès began its biodiversity programme with bird boxes, bat shelters and hedge planting, then expanded this landscape work to 8,000 metres of hedges and 180 bird or bat shelters. Hedges and shelters create habitat around cultivated land, while the cooperative’s organic direction reduces the reliance on conventional vineyard treatments.
Vineyards And Cellar
The Codognan cellar first received fruit for the 2018 harvest. It contains 200 covered stainless-steel tanks with 135,000 hectolitres of tank capacity, and its connected equipment allows the cooperative to follow many separate lots through fermentation and storage. Stainless steel keeps fruit and fermentation character at the centre, an apt tool for varietal IGP Pays d’Oc wines where blackberry, pepper, floral notes or citrus-like freshness need not be masked by new wood.
The building also uses ventilated façades and protection from solar radiation for natural cooling, with photovoltaic roofing and rainwater recovery part of its environmental plans. In the cellar, Héraclès has also undertaken vinifications without added sulfites. That is a distinct choice from its standard wines, but it shows a willingness to test how fruit can be made with a lighter intervention in the tank.
Wines
The confirmed bottle in the available range is Spring Village Syrah Organic 2023, made from 92% Syrah and 8% Viognier. Syrah supplies the wine’s blackberry, blueberry, pepper and savoury bay-leaf character; the small Viognier component sits alongside violet perfume and red-berry notes. It is an IGP Pays d’Oc red built around grape expression rather than a named village or cru.
Its making is direct: the must fermented in stainless steel, then rested in contact with oak for two months. That short oak contact brings vanilla and a lightly oaked frame without turning the wine into a wood-led red. The documented style is medium-bodied with low acidity and a balanced palate, placing it in a supple, fruit-forward register rather than a firm, tannic one.
In The Glass
Pour Spring Village Syrah Organic 2023 for blackberry and blueberry first, followed by wild raspberry and strawberry. Violet lifts the fruit, while bay leaf and white pepper give the Syrah a dry, savoury edge. Two months of oak contact adds a light vanilla note rather than a thick toasted layer.
On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied and low in acidity, with soft weight through the middle and modest oak around the fruit. The finish moves from dark berries to pepper, bay leaf and vanilla, so it works best when served slightly cool enough to keep the floral and spice notes audible.
A Bottle To Understand It
Start with Spring Village Syrah Organic 2023. It is a Gard IGP Pays d’Oc red that makes the cooperative’s approach tangible: organic fruit, stainless-steel fermentation, a brief period with oak, and a clear Syrah-led blend softened by 8% Viognier. Expect medium body, blackberry, blueberry, violet, white pepper and a faint vanilla note, with low acidity and a rounded finish. It is the documented bottle that shows how Héraclès turns large-scale cooperative fruit into a specific, approachable red.
Anecdote
On 30 November 2017, Héraclès installed the first tank for its new connected winery and wine laboratory at Codognan. The project was valued at €15.5 million and included an innovation platform described as a living lab for wine. Its financing combined €7 million in borrowing, €3 million in self-financing and €5.5 million in public subsidies; in December 2017, €1 million was still missing. The tank installation came before the building’s first harvest, which arrived in 2018. The completed cellar would hold 200 covered stainless-steel tanks and 135,000 hectolitres of tank capacity.
Final Word
Héraclès is worth knowing for the contrast between its cooperative scale and its concrete farming work: 80 growers, 1,200 hectares, organic vineyards, hedges and wildlife shelters, then a modern stainless-steel cellar in Codognan. Spring Village Syrah Organic 2023 supplies the useful glass-level answer: dark berries, violet, pepper, light oak and medium-bodied weight.
