Saget La Perrière

Nine generations from Pouilly-sur-Loire, Saget La Perrière follows Sauvignon Blanc from crisp Vin de France to textured Pouilly-Fumé and Sancerre.

The producer

Saget La Perrière is a Loire family company rooted in Pouilly-sur-Loire, where Domaine Saget has been based for nine generations. Jean-Louis and Marie-Claire Saget, with their sons Arnaud and Laurent, form the family thread; Jean-Louis began the modern company project, and Arnaud and Laurent now carry it forward. Sauvignon Blanc is the clearest line through the bottles, joined at La Perrière by Pinot Noir.

La Petite Perrière Sauvignon Blanc brings grapefruit, peach and crisp citrus in a Vin de France style. La Perrière Pouilly-Fumé moves to pear, white peach, quince and white flowers, with lively acidity and lemon on the finish after stainless-steel fermentation and lees ageing. Domaine de La Perrière Sancerre Blanc adds chalky and siliceous ground, floral fruit and a more supple texture.

Known for

Loire Sauvignon Blanc across Vin de France, Pouilly-Fumé and Sancerre, with Pinot Noir at La Perrière.

The story

The underwater cellar

In 1990, Jean-Louis Saget introduced what the family calls the first underwater cellar. This dated initiative belongs to the account of the modern family-company project that Jean-Louis began from the Saget family’s Pouilly-sur-Loire roots. The family describes nine generations in the Loire and names Jean-Louis and Marie-Claire Saget with their sons, Arnaud and Laurent. Arnaud and Laurent now represent the family’s heritage. The producer’s account dates the cellar initiative to 1990 and presents it as part of Jean-Louis Saget’s work on the modern company.

The Producer

Saget La Perrière begins in Pouilly-sur-Loire, where Domaine Saget has been based for nine generations. Jean-Louis and Marie-Claire Saget, and their sons Arnaud and Laurent, sit at the centre of the family story: Jean-Louis initiated the modern company project, while Arnaud and Laurent now carry it forward. The useful thread through the collection is Sauvignon Blanc, from a broadly sourced Vin de France to labelled Sancerre and Pouilly-Fumé, where appellation and parcel change the fruit, acidity and texture in the glass.

Place

The family’s Loire collection stretches from Domaine Saget in Pouilly-sur-Loire to La Perrière in Verdigny-en-Sancerre, with estates in Sancerre, Touraine and Anjou. This is not one uniform Sauvignon Blanc landscape. La Petite Perrière Sauvignon Blanc carries the Vin de France designation and puts grapefruit, peach and crisp citrus first; La Perrière Pouilly-Fumé narrows the address to its local appellation and brings pear, white peach, quince and lemon into a firmer, lively frame.

Soil And Site

At Domaine Saget in Pouilly-sur-Loire, clay-limestone and Kimmeridgian soils support Pouilly-Fumé with a mineral register alongside its citrus and floral fruit. At Domaine de La Perrière in Verdigny-en-Sancerre, vineyards span five districts, including a single 10-hectare block on flint soils; Sauvignon Blanc from this ground is associated with mineral character rather than only ripe fruit. The estate cellar sits in a natural cave formed 200 million years ago, a physical setting for the house devoted to Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir.

Story

Jean-Louis Saget built the modern family-company project from the Pouilly-sur-Loire base, extending a long family presence into a wider Loire collection. La Perrière became the focused house for Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir, while the estate wines retain their appellation names: Sancerre Blanc from chalky and siliceous ground, Pouilly-Fumé from the family’s home territory, and other wines from Touraine and Anjou. The result is a range in which the grape repeats, but the label tells you whether to expect direct citrus fruit, a chalky mineral note or a more layered, lees-aged palate.

Vineyards And Cellar

The cellar work keeps Sauvignon Blanc’s aromatic fruit in view. La Petite Perrière Sauvignon Blanc is made from fruit that is half hand-harvested, sorted in the vineyard, given a short cold pre-fermentation maceration and held for three to four months on fine lees; the consequence is pale-gold wine with grapefruit and peach above a crisp citrus palate. La Perrière Pouilly-Fumé ferments in stainless steel at low temperature, then spends six months on fine lees and at least six to eight months in cellar, preserving fresh pear and peach while adding more weight through the middle.

Domaine de La Perrière Sancerre Blanc follows direct pneumatic pressing, 48-hour cold settling, low-temperature fermentation and three to four months on fine lees. Those steps carry white flowers, vineyard peach and acacia into a supple, structured texture rather than a sharp, simple Sauvignon Blanc. Further west, Domaine des Grandes Espérances follows Terra Vitis requirements, while the Anjou estate reports hand harvesting: farming details that keep fruit handling central across a collection with several Loire addresses.

Wines

La Petite Perrière Sauvignon Blanc is the broadest Sauvignon Blanc statement: 100% Sauvignon Blanc under the Vin de France designation, with grapefruit, peach, citrus and exotic fruit over light-to-medium body. La Perrière Pouilly-Fumé is also 100% Sauvignon Blanc, but its appellation bottling is aged longer on fine lees and in cellar; pear, white peach, quince, white flowers and boxwood sit over lively acidity and a lemon finish.

Domaine de La Perrière Sancerre Blanc takes Sauvignon Blanc to chalky and siliceous soils with caillottes, giving white fruit and floral notes a mineral edge and more structured palate. Le Domaine Saget Pouilly-Fumé draws fruit from four family parcels, including Chantalouettes and Vaurigny, on Kimmeridgian marl. Nine months on fine lees and six to eight months in bottle lead to floral aromas, lychee, pineapple and grapefruit, a round opening, light acidity and a long finish. Pinot Noir remains the other central grape at La Perrière, though the sourced material here gives the fullest wine detail to Sauvignon Blanc.

In The Glass

Across these Sauvignon Blancs, the aroma sequence moves from grapefruit and peach in La Petite Perrière to pear, quince, white flowers and lemon in La Perrière Pouilly-Fumé. The fresher Vin de France has crisp citrus and exotic fruit, while the Pouilly-Fumé’s lees ageing gives pear and peach more body on the palate before the lemon finish pulls it dry. In Sancerre, white flowers, vineyard peach, acacia and mineral notes arrive with supple structure; the parcel-composed Domaine Saget bottling broadens toward lychee, pineapple and grapefruit, then finishes long after a round first impression.

A Bottle To Understand It

Start with La Perrière Pouilly-Fumé. It is 100% Sauvignon Blanc from the Pouilly-Fumé AOC, fermented in stainless steel at low temperature, aged for six months on fine lees and held for at least six to eight further months in cellar. The wine brings pear, white peach, quince and white flowers onto a palate with lively acidity, then closes with lemon. It shows the family’s home territory without losing Sauvignon Blanc’s clean fruit: more texture than La Petite Perrière, but less parcel-specific than Le Domaine Saget Pouilly-Fumé.

Anecdote

In 1990, Jean-Louis Saget introduced what the family describes as the first underwater cellar. The event sits in the account of the modern Saget family company alongside Jean-Louis and Marie-Claire Saget and their sons, Arnaud and Laurent. The available record does not name the water, describe the construction or say which bottles went into it, so the striking detail remains exactly that: a Loire wine family led by Jean-Louis Saget put an underwater cellar into its story in 1990. It is a dated episode from the man who initiated the modern family-company project, rather than a claim about how every Saget La Perrière wine is made.

Final Word

Saget La Perrière is most useful to follow through Sauvignon Blanc labels. Begin with the pear, peach and lemon of La Perrière Pouilly-Fumé, then compare its lees-aged body with the crisp citrus of La Petite Perrière and the floral, mineral shape of Domaine de La Perrière Sancerre Blanc.
