Rombauer Winery

Founded in 1980, Rombauer has purchased Carneros Chardonnay grapes through a lasting Sangiacomo family partnership since 1990.

The producer

Koerner and Joan Rombauer founded Rombauer Vineyards in 1980. Ten years later, the winery purchased its first Chardonnay grapes from Carneros. That purchase began a lasting partnership with the Sangiacomo family, then three generations into farming. The founding date and the start of this Carneros relationship form the early chronology of a California producer whose Chardonnay program has continued across subsequent decades.

The Producer

Koerner and Joan Rombauer founded Rombauer Vineyards in 1980. By 2018, the business encompassed roughly 380 hectares across Napa, Sonoma and the Sierra Foothills, together with three wineries and two tasting rooms. Rombauer joined Gallo's premium portfolio in summer 2023 while retaining substantial autonomy.

Richie Allen leads winemaking, supported by Luke Clayton, Andrew Holloway and Joe Coughlin. Only three head winemakers have guided the fruit-driven house style across more than four decades. Vineyard management combines NDVI aerial imagery with ground observation, informing vine-level choices about planting, rootstocks, clones, pruning, canopy management, irrigation and harvest.

All Rombauer Chardonnay is fermented and aged in oak barrels, while about ten percent of the Sauvignon Blanc spends time in barrel. The producer holds California Sustainable and Napa Green certifications. On-site winery-wastewater treatment, solar power, composting of green waste, cover crops and owl boxes are among its environmental practices.

Wines

Rombauer first purchased Chardonnay grapes from Carneros in 1990, beginning a lasting partnership with the Sangiacomo family. The wider range spans Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Zinfandel, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir and Merlot.

The 2023 Rombauer Carneros Chardonnay is made entirely from Chardonnay. It brings yellow peach, melon, citrus, mango and apricot alongside honeysuckle, pie crust, vanilla, butter and oak. The palate is dry and minimally tannic, with bright acidity, medium-plus body and a creamy, rich texture.

Proprietor Selection is assembled from the top Chardonnay barrels each year. Rombauer presents it as a more concentrated extension of the Carneros Chardonnay style, with intense fruit flavours, a round body and brilliant acidity.
