Raen Winery

Coastal Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir and Chardonnay shaped by Pacific-side vineyards, whole clusters, native yeast and neutral oak.

The producer

Founded in 2013 by brothers Carlo and Dante Mondavi, Raen works about 38 acres on the western Sonoma Coast near the Pacific. Pinot Noir and Chardonnay are the focus, with permaculture, regenerative and organic vineyard practices supporting a small coastal range. The Freestone Occidental home estate has been certified organic since 2022.

Royal St. Robert is Raen’s wider Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir cuvée, while Bodega narrows the view to two lower blocks totaling 1.8 acres. In Royal St. Robert, red fruit, citrus, floral notes and spice meet bright acidity, medium body and fine-grained tannin; whole-cluster fermentation and neutral oak keep the wine dry, textured and lightly marked by wood.

Known for

Western Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, from Pacific-side vineyards and a cellar programme built around whole clusters, native yeast and neutral oak.

The story

The Monarch Challenge

In 2016, Carlo Mondavi and the Raen team launched the Monarch Challenge to promote clean farming and a future that protects biodiversity in Sonoma, Napa and beyond. The initiative arrived while Carlo and Dante were building Raen’s Pinot Noir and Chardonnay project on the western Sonoma Coast, three years after founding the winery in 2013. Its focus extended beyond the estate’s own vines, placing farming practices and habitat protection in the same regional conversation. Raen’s Freestone Occidental home estate was later certified organic in 2022 and became a wildlife-rescue release site, where a bobcat and a fox family have made their home.

Raen Winery

At A Glance

Raen Winery is a western Sonoma Coast producer founded in 2013 by brothers Carlo and Dante Mondavi. Its roughly 38 acres near the Pacific are planted to Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, placing coastal vineyards rather than a broad varietal range at the centre of the bottles.

The name RAEN means Research in Agriculture and Enology Naturally. That stated focus runs from permaculture, regenerative and organic vineyard work to whole-cluster fermentation, native yeast and neutral oak in the cellar, leaving Pinot Noir fruit, acidity and texture in clear view.

The Producer

Carlo and Dante Mondavi are fourth-generation winemakers and farmers: Robert Mondavi was their grandfather and Tim Mondavi their father. They founded Raen on Sonoma Coast’s western boundary, where Pinot Noir and Chardonnay are the two grapes under cultivation. Melanie McIntyre is part of the winemaking team, working within a project built around coastal sites rather than the family’s earlier Napa associations.

Raen’s labels connect a regional Sonoma Coast cuvée with more tightly defined vineyard bottlings. Royal St. Robert gathers fruit from more than one site, while Bodega narrows the view to two lower blocks. The difference matters in the glass: a cuvée can assemble several vineyard elements, while a single-vineyard wine keeps attention on one small portion of the coast.

Place

Raen farms on the westerly Sonoma Coast, near the Pacific Ocean. The ocean-facing setting is the producer’s frame for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, grapes whose perfume, acidity and fruit shape are closely tied to where and how they ripen.

The Sonoma Coast name on Royal St. Robert describes a wider regional wine, not one vineyard alone. Bodega carries a single-vineyard role instead, so its label points toward a smaller physical origin within Raen’s coastal holdings.

Soil And Site

The documented site detail is Raen’s proximity to the Pacific and the division of its Bodega vineyard into blocks. Bodega comes from two lower blocks totaling 1.8 acres; an upper block contributes the backbone of Royal St. Robert. Block position therefore has a practical consequence in the range: lower-block fruit is bottled as Bodega, while fruit from higher ground supports a Sonoma Coast cuvée.

Raen’s Freestone Occidental home estate has been certified organic since 2022. The estate also serves as a wildlife-rescue release site, placing vineyard farming and surrounding habitat on the same ground as the Pinot Noir and Chardonnay vines.

Story

The Mondavi brothers began Raen in 2013 after growing up in a winemaking family, but the new estate was set on the far western Sonoma Coast rather than in Napa. Carlo and Dante named it Research in Agriculture and Enology Naturally, then built the work around two cool-climate grapes and vineyards near the Pacific. The result is a producer whose story is carried by coastal Pinot Noir and Chardonnay labels, not by a large mixed portfolio.

The family background supplies experience, while the estate’s choices supply the wine direction. Pinot Noir receives whole-cluster handling and native-yeast fermentation; neutral oak avoids adding a dominant oak flavour. Those practices put fruit, floral notes, savoury detail, acidity and tannin at the centre of the finished wines.

Vineyards And Cellar

Raen describes its vineyard work as permaculture, regenerative and organic. At Freestone Occidental, organic certification since 2022 gives that language a formal farming marker. With Pinot Noir and Chardonnay as the planted grapes, the vineyard programme is directed toward the fruit that enters a small coastal range.

In the cellar, whole clusters retain stems with the Pinot Noir fruit, native yeast carries fermentation, and neutral oak is used for ageing. Whole-cluster work can bring floral perfume, spice and tannin; neutral barrels contribute texture without turning the wine into an oak-led style. Native-yeast fermentation keeps the focus on the fruit and cellar process rather than a selected commercial yeast profile.

Wines

Raen’s range begins with Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir and Chardonnay and moves toward more specific vineyard expressions. Royal St. Robert is the regional Pinot Noir cuvée, assembled from more than one site with fruit from an upper block forming its backbone. It is the wine for seeing how Raen combines vineyard material into one coastal expression: red fruit, acidity, tannin and body are arranged across a broader Sonoma Coast frame.

Bodega is the more narrowly drawn Pinot Noir. Its fruit comes from two lower blocks totaling 1.8 acres, so the bottling carries a single-vineyard designation rather than the regional structure of Royal St. Robert. Chardonnay remains part of the estate’s core range, sharing the same Pacific-side setting, though the supplied record does not support a more detailed bottle-by-bottle account.

In The Glass

The 2023 Royal St. Robert Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir is described with red fruit, citrus, floral notes and spice, followed by bright acidity, fine-grained tannin and a medium-bodied palate. Whole-cluster fermentation helps account for the floral and spice register, while the coastal source and neutral oak keep fruit and structure ahead of overt barrel flavour.

Its finish is dry and persistent, with tannin providing grip rather than heavy weight. The wine’s shape is therefore less about dense extraction than a sequence of aromatic fruit, fresh acidity, textured tannin and savoury length.

A Bottle To Understand It

Start with the 2023 Royal St. Robert Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir. It gathers fruit from several sites, including an upper block that supplies its backbone, making it a useful view of how Raen builds a regional cuvée from coastal vineyard material. Expect red fruit, citrus, floral notes and spice over bright acidity, medium body and fine-grained tannin, with a dry finish and little overt oak character.

This bottle also puts the cellar choices into practical terms: whole clusters can bring spice and floral lift, native yeast carries the fermentation, and neutral oak preserves fruit rather than coating it in vanilla or toast. It is a Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir with grip and length, while Bodega can follow when the interest is a smaller vineyard lens.

Anecdote

In 2016, Carlo Mondavi and the Raen team launched the Monarch Challenge. The initiative was created to promote clean farming and a future that protects biodiversity in Sonoma, Napa and beyond. Its name brought a particular species into the conversation around vineyard work, while its stated scope reached beyond Raen’s own Sonoma Coast acres. The launch came three years after Carlo and Dante Mondavi founded Raen in 2013, when the brothers were establishing their own Pinot Noir and Chardonnay project on the western edge of the Sonoma Coast. Raen’s Freestone Occidental home estate would later gain organic certification in 2022 and serve as a wildlife-rescue release site.

Final Word

Raen is most clearly understood through the connection between Pacific-side Sonoma Coast vineyards and Pinot Noir labels with distinct roles. Royal St. Robert shows the estate’s regional blending; Bodega takes the view down to two lower blocks. Whole clusters, native yeast and neutral oak then shape the fruit into dry wines with acidity, tannin, perfume and a long finish.
