Quintas de Melgaço
At A Glance
Quintas de Melgaço is a Vinho Verde producer based at Ferreiros de Cima, Alvaredo, in Melgaço, Portugal. Alvarinho is its central grape, and the company represents 530 growers from different quintas in the region. Its range includes still whites, a four-harvest Alvarinho, an Alvarinho and Sauvignon Blanc blend, and sparkling wine.
The Producer
Amadeu Abílio Lopes founded Quintas de Melgaço after recognising the importance of Alvarinho in the region. The company was created in 1990 and began operating in 1994, with a practical purpose: to unite hundreds of small and medium winegrowers around a shared wine company. That collective origin still shapes how the range is understood. The bottles are rooted in Melgaço, but they draw on grapes from a network of different quintas rather than a single named estate.
Lopes had gone to Brazil in the middle of the 20th century and became a prominent industrialist there. His return to the wine map of Melgaço connected an international commercial life with a local grape. Alvarinho provides the through-line, while the range tests several ways of presenting it, from an older vineyard to a multi-vintage blend and a sparkling wine.
Place
Melgaço lies close to the Atlantic, but its mountains protect the vineyards from maritime winds. The vineyards sit at mid-slope in a natural amphitheatre cooled by the Minho River. Altitude, rainfall, temperature, and hours of sunshine are all presented as conditions that help Alvarinho ripen.
That combination gives the place two useful directions. The river and mountain setting help preserve freshness, while the protected position allows the grapes to reach fuller ripeness. The label Vinho Verde therefore leads here to a northern Melgaço reading of Alvarinho, with place and grape working together in the bottle.
Soil And Site
No soil type is attached to the vineyards here. The useful site distinction comes from height. Quintas de Melgaço associates lower zones with minerality and higher zones with freshness, so elevation becomes a way to read differences within the growing area.
The mid-slope position sits between those two cues. It places the vines in the river-cooled amphitheatre while keeping them above the lowest ground, with altitude, sunlight, and rainfall contributing to grape ripening.
Story
Quintas de Melgaço began as a collective answer to the scattered shape of local winegrowing. The company brought hundreds of small and medium producers together in 1990, then started operating in 1994. Its geographical focus stayed in Melgaço, while its company form gave individual quintas a shared route for their wine.
The arc continued through changes in ownership and format. Lopes donated 68.8 percent of the company’s share capital to Melgaço municipality. In 1999, QM Espumante Reserva added sparkling wine to an Alvarinho-centred range. The story moves from a regional grape and many growers to a broader set of bottle styles, without leaving Melgaço behind.
Vineyards And Cellar
The vineyard network is the defining practical fact. Quintas de Melgaço represents 530 growers from different quintas, all connected to the Melgaço region. Their vineyards occupy the mid-slope amphitheatre cooled by the Minho River, where mountain shelter, altitude, rainfall, temperature, and sunshine shape ripening.
The range is easier to read through declared grape, vineyard age, blending choice, and format than through cellar technique. QM Alvarinho Vinhas Velhas names a vineyard more than 30 years old. QM Patriam combines Alvarinho from four separate harvests. The Sauvignon Blanc bottling changes the grape blend, while Espumante Reserva changes the format. Oak, lees ageing, fermentation vessels, dosage, and harvest methods are not established here.
Wines
QM Alvarinho Vinhas Velhas is the most specific still white in the range. It is made from Alvarinho grown in a vineyard more than 30 years old, and its published profile gives a full mouth, fruity flavour, balanced acidity, and a long, persistent finish. The bottle connects the region’s defining grape with a named age-of-vines detail.
QM Alvarinho Barro remains a single-grape Alvarinho white. Its profile is presented through colour, aroma, freshness, texture, and finish, giving it a direct place within the still-white range even though the detailed descriptors are not available here.
QM Patriam takes a different route. It blends Alvarinho from four separate harvests, making vintage combination its defining cellar decision. QM Alvarinho and Sauvignon Blanc brings together two grapes and is described through fruit, body, and acidity. QM Espumante Reserva, launched in 1999, opens the sparkling branch of the range, although its grape composition, production method, sweetness, and ageing are not established.
In The Glass
Vinhas Velhas begins with fruit and a broad, full mouth. The balanced acidity then carries the wine through the palate, preventing its weight from feeling flat. The finish stretches out and persists, leaving the wine’s fruit and acidity together rather than ending abruptly.
Barro is presented with freshness, texture, and a defined finish, giving the Alvarinho range a different emphasis from the fuller Vinhas Velhas profile. Patriam’s four-harvest blend puts the focus on how multiple seasons meet in one bottle. The Alvarinho and Sauvignon Blanc blend brings fruit, body, and acidity into the same glass. Espumante Reserva changes the mouthfeel through carbonation, but its detailed taste profile remains open.
A Bottle To Understand It
Start with QM Alvarinho Vinhas Velhas. It is Alvarinho from a vineyard more than 30 years old, with a full and fruity mouth, balanced acidity, and a long, persistent finish. The bottle brings together the grape that prompted Lopes to found the company, the older-vine detail that separates it from a general regional white, and a clear sequence from ripe fruit to lasting acidity.
It is the most grounded first taste of Quintas de Melgaço because the vineyard age, grape, mouth weight, acidity, and finish are all clearly connected. Serve it as a still white with enough room in the glass for its fruit and palate length to unfold.
Anecdote
Amadeu Abílio Lopes left for Brazil in the middle of the 20th century and became a prominent industrialist. After his years there, he founded Quintas de Melgaço in 1990 because he recognised what Alvarinho could mean for Melgaço. The company gathered hundreds of small and medium winegrowers around their wine, then began operating in 1994. Lopes later donated 68.8 percent of the company’s share capital to Melgaço municipality. Five years after operations began, the range changed format again: QM Espumante Reserva was launched in 1999.
Final Word
Quintas de Melgaço brings three concrete elements into one range: Alvarinho, the mountain-protected vineyards of Melgaço, and a network of 530 growers. Begin with QM Alvarinho Vinhas Velhas for the clearest link between grape, older vineyard, full fruit, balanced acidity, and a persistent finish.
