Notable facts

The story

Prugneto Gets A Second Sort

For Prugneto, Poderi dal Nespoli hand selects grapes into small crates, ensuring that the best fruit arrives at the winery undamaged. Small crates protect the fruit in transit, while a vibrating table provides a second physical check at the winery. The first selection happens before the fruit reaches the winery; the second happens after arrival. The grapes are checked before and after transport, by hand first and on the vibrating table second. The handling choice protects the fruit before delivery and inspects it again after delivery.

The Producer

In Nespoli, Poderi dal Nespoli controls the complete production chain from vineyard to glass. Its range includes white and red Nespolino wines alongside Il Nespoli Romagna Sangiovese Superiore Riserva. The winery building uses materials, architectural choices and energy production facilities intended to reduce environmental impact.

Place

The Bidente Valley connects the Apennines on the border with Tuscany with the Romagna Riviera and has long served as a crossing point. Poderi dal Nespoli cultivates its vineyards in a microclimate with a wide temperature range. That range encourages intense, fruity aromas in the glass.

Story

Scipione Giuliani is the winemaker at Poderi dal Nespoli. He makes current wines in a house whose winegrowing story dates to 1929 and spans four generations of Romagna winemakers.

Vineyards And Cellar

At cellar level, Nespolino Trebbiano Chardonnay is vinified and matured in stainless steel. Nespolino Sangiovese Merlot is vinified in steel and receives light ageing in 25 hectolitre barrels.

Stainless steel limits oxygen contact and preserves primary fruit. Barrels expose wine to gradual oxygen and add wood influence, giving the red a different cellar treatment from the white.

Wines

The range is organised around white and red Nespolino blends and a varietal Sangiovese Riserva. Nespolino Trebbiano Chardonnay combines Trebbiano and Chardonnay. Nespolino Sangiovese Merlot combines Sangiovese and Merlot. Il Nespoli Romagna Sangiovese Superiore Riserva uses Sangiovese alone.

The red Nespolino is dry and harmonious, while Il Nespoli has capacity for long ageing.

In The Glass

The white Nespolino opens with citrus from Trebbiano and ripe Chardonnay notes of pineapple, papaya and mango. It is fresh and drinkable, straw yellow in colour with slight green hues.

The red Nespolino brings Sangiovese cherry and violet with Merlot's herbal and chocolate notes. Its palate is balanced. Il Nespoli combines marasca cherry, blackberry and plum with licorice and roasted coffee. French barriques lend a touch of vanilla, and the wine is soft and warm with well balanced tannins.

A Bottle To Understand It

Choose Il Nespoli Romagna Sangiovese Superiore Riserva. It is made from Sangiovese alone and aged in oak for 12 months. The Nespolino wines are blends; this bottle carries the Riserva designation with a single grape variety.

Anecdote

For Prugneto, Poderi dal Nespoli hand selects grapes into small crates, ensuring that the best fruit arrives at the winery undamaged. Small crates protect the fruit in transit, while a vibrating table provides a second physical check at the winery. The first selection happens before the fruit reaches the winery; the second happens after arrival. The grapes are checked before and after transport, by hand first and on the vibrating table second.

Final Word

At Nespoli, the white combines Trebbiano and Chardonnay, the red combines Sangiovese and Merlot, and Il Nespoli uses Sangiovese alone under the Riserva name.
